The rounded side does go into the tank, the other side has a leading edge chamfer to align the filler tube.

This is starting to sound like a Twix commercial.

Follow-up:

Right or wrong, I'm installing it with rounded side in for 3 reasons

1) Stock tank is installed that way.  May have been replaced over the years, but factory PN is on flat side, seems logical they would want this visible
2) Flat side has beveled opening, easier to insert tube without damaging seal
3) Rounded side has smaller opening, this is the extra sealing from earlier design, seems extra seal should be inside tank, not outside after a leak of primary seal

I've restored my share of E Bodies and have seen them both ways. :alan2cents: The way you suggest makes perfect sense. :ohyeah:

Follow-up for anyone installing a tank in a Challenger:

Alan is absolutely right, it's just not possible to install the tube with the straps holding the tank up.
Had to disassemble everything and follow Alan's advice......

Live and learn, but at least it's now in

With the tube mounted completely in place, the floor grommet as well....
Hook the straps in place and allow to hang
Hook the J bolts in place and allow to hang
Install the tank on the tube, by pushing up and over
grab a strap and hook it up to the J bolt and start a nut - repeat
make sure everything is centered up and tighten.

I have to suggest mixing up the steps a little. I just started the J-hooks on the straps, put the tank up and hooked the J's into the floor brace.

In manufacturing those J's are a "drop and go" feature that help the operator install it a bit easier. Installing the hook into the chassis first makes it a little more difficult, to me.

Just installed my tank this evening.

Replacing my gas tank as part of an EFI upgrade.
Does the rounded side of the grommet go in tank or face outside?
Any tips to make the whole tank install easier?

Thx

I installed mine with the rounded edge outside of the tank . . .

Anyone have a suggestion for a basic gas cap that fits a, I believe, 70-style Cuda filler neck?

I bought a 70-74 replacement filler neck and a cap for a 72 [Rock Auto]. The cap snugs up and then pops loose again as you tighten it.

Is the issue the cap or the filler neck?  Do you have an old filler tube you can check the cap on?

Finally getting around to the gas tank install after welding in the trunk floor
My original tank gasket had the flat side up and the round side down
Original part number on the flat side.
Picked up the Detroit Muscle gasket too!  Nice quality
