1970 "Hellbird" Superbird

More than I could afford!  Cool car I'd drive it!

I talked to David Rea, former employee at GYC, about this car. If you notice is some of the pics, they had to install a spacer between the frame rail and the k-member so that the supercharger would fit under the hood.  This makes the oil pan and headers extremely close to the ground.

IMO, this car was built for SEMA and not a driver so I would expect many problems and issues to work out if you actually wanted to drive it around.  Still, some intoxicated millionaire at BJ will probably blow $100k+ just to have it.   :cheers:

I don't really "get it". Looks stock but isn't a resto, big power under the hood which isn't at all usable. I think with Hellcat power I would do the Pro Touring or Pro Street (I don't know if they still call it that) or an actual race car. It looks to be a nice job though.

It does fall into an odd category....It looks on the outside like a nice replica of a Superbird, Polyglas tires and all, but then under the hood it has this new motor  :looney: :looney:

I think if it was a ''resto-mod'' they wanted, then it should have larger wheels, big sway bars, brakes etc...if it's a stock look they wanted then it should have an old school Hemi under the hood  ::)


...but I agree it will sell for $200K+ at auction :drunk:

If I remember correctly, Worman had his tit in the wringer and needed a car to dump the Hellcat engine in for SEMA. He convinced the Superbird owner to let him remove the 440 he just put in to the nearly complete restoration and put the Hellcat engine in "free".  So the car was pretty much done as an original restoration.

Why is it any different than what people in this forum are doing ? Putting new 392 hemi in ebodies ?

From what I can see there are two issues.. The car looks like a stock bird, then it has this modern motor, what's the point of making it appear stock and have a modern power plant?

The other thing is the drivability issues due to the modifications required for the supercharger. I wouldn't go through the trouble of putting that motor in ANY car if I couldn't rip it up on the street.

Is it cool? Hell yeah it's cool.. Is it practical? Nope...

And yes, I'd like to put the non-supercharged 392 crate motor in my Cuda.

It's pro-touring already (modern drivetrain, front suspension).

It just has stock wheels on it.

I dunno, I'm big on the pro-touring look, but to me, a wing car won't look right w/tall wheels/rubber band tires.

In fact, I would want it to look more like this:

Apparently it sold for $145,000. I realize that GYC had "sponsored" components to use, but wouldn't they have lost money on the project ? All of us expect to not get our invested money back, but GYC is in it strictly for profit.

$145 sounds fair. Personally I'd dump a 440 into the bird and shove the Hellcrate into an A-body. For that price it would be worth the price of parts. Although is this a real or fake bird?
edit; Nevermind it's fake, so not that great of a deal I don't think.

Yea...someone over paid for the GYC connection....I thought it would have any got more money  :drunk: but I guess there wasn't enough drunk rich people there.

A clone Superbird done as nice as this one is should MAYBE bring $75K-$80K  :dunno:  and then the crate motor MAYBE another $30K.....so I'm not sure where the value is...

Great idea, somehow this engine just doesn't belong in this car? Maybe it's just me? Maybe if they ditched those rims and tires...?  :notsure: Design/esthetically the car just seems off to me?

Sheesh guys-this thing is AWESOME. Car is bad ass to me. This is my idea of a "resto-mod". Doesn't have goofy wheels on it and it's not 1/2" off the ground. I would be proud to drive it...  :alan2cents:
