Here is the page from the dealer data guide.  It talks about the stripe delete code but doesn't go into detail.

QuoteWhat's A57 and V6X?

A57 is the code for the Rallye package.  In 73 and 74, the Rallye was just an option...not a separate model.  If a 73 or 74 has the Rallye package, code A57 will be on the fender tag.

V6X is a stripe code.

On my data plate M08 is not there, but everything I can find says that the 1972 Rally came with the scoops/louvers.

I have seen some modern Black Challengers with black stripes and you are right....it looked amazing.

Here is a picture of a 72 Rallye.  This car has side mouldings though.  It's a 318 car.  Notice the correctly painted Rallye tail panel.  This was 72 only. This tail panel looks like it's probably original paint.

@Burdar  Did they reverse the tail panel/light pocket paint scheme for 73-74?

The 72 pictured shows the correct paint treatment for a 72 Rallye. The standard 72 Challenger as well as ALL 73-74s had the reverse paint scheme.

So does anyone know.....would the car in question have been built with the side mouldings on the front fenders?

I had a friend send me this post that he found on one of the other sites. At the end of this post, the author is also unsure of the louvers/scoops being deleted if the stripe delete (V68) was requested.

"For JS23-Rallye: The guide makes no mention of the hood being on this model, but I'm sure it was std., otherwise what the heck would make it a Rallye model? It only says that the hood came w/ the 340 engine, in either JH23 or JS23. The louvers & stripes are std. on JS23, as well as the cluster. The louvers & stripes were std. on JS23, but there is a delete code for just the stripes--V68. Here's something else interesting about the stripes. If you ordered the V5X-black vinyl body side moldings, the stripes were deleted. I'm assuming you still got the louvers with the side moldings, since, as I mentioned, you could also delete the stripes. However, the guide is unclear as to whether the louvers were deleted if you deleted the stripes, or choose the side moldings instead."

After dealing with this louvers/scoop issue for my 72 Rallye, I'm beginning to understand now why Mopar started scaling the available options back in model year 1972. Looking back there sure was a plethora of option pacakges that were offered on the 1970 and 1971 E body cars. All these various combinations of options that would trigger automatic additions and deletes of other options ....it's no wonder that some cars had more than one fender tag. It was probably a bit of a nightmare for the factory or the customer sitting with his dealer trying to special order a car.

John

Hi I'm new to this site and I know the post I'm responding to is old but i had the same situation  with the missing scoops on a 72 ralley challenger. The car has the v68 option it's a triple black car no side stripes and no scoops I'm currently restoring the car but I purchased it from the original owner who has a pic of the car outside the dealer when purchased it has no fender scoops. Just thought you'd like to know.

Hi John,

All the evidence I gathered about my triple black 72 Challenger Rallye with the stripe delete option is that it came from the factory without the front fender reverse scoop moldings.  I am not sure if it was like this on all triple black's with stripe delete's or not.  The car was ordered by the original owner through Lone Star Dodge in Dallas, Texas and still retains all of it's original bodywork, including the front fenders. I have the original dealer order sheet for the car showing all of the options, including the stipe delete. Perhaps at the time the car was ordered there was an undocumented option for black painted E-bodies to delete the scoops if the the stripe was also deleted.

Cheers,

Vince

This Rallye was not optioned with body side molding, but good thought.

As an FYI its possible for a 1972 Challenger rallye to have the bodyside moldings option.

As others have stated the 72 challenger are much different than the 70-71 models. In 1972 a rallye challenger was still its own model "JS" and could be optioned with the bodyside moldings.

The code for the "body side protective molding with vinyl" insert is V5_ (the last digit being the color code).

When a 1972 challenger rallye was ordered with the V5_ code for bodyside moldings the rallye scoops were DELETED.

Also, the 1972 challenger rallye model came standard with the 318 engine, NOT the 340. The 340 had to be ordrerd as an option.

The 1973-74 challenger rallye cars don't follow the same guidelines since they are not separate models but an option code.
