I have been planning my convertible T/A build to use a 340 six pack and I have all the parts to do it with a 4 spd as well.  When I first came up with the T/A idea, I was thinking 440 six pack to make it a little more different.  I gave up on the idea and went the 340 route because I couldn't find an exhaust system head pipes for a 440 to the T/A mufflers, plus ease of finding the correct parts for a T/A build.

Recently I picked up a 440 block and now I'm thinking of going 440 instead of 340 and getting headers and custom-made head pipes.  I have none of the parts to do a 440 six pack at this point.  I would have to get everything including a different 4 spd (18 spline).

If I do go the 440 route, will the 340 air cleaner assembly for the T/A work on the 440 and still seal properly to the T/A hood?

Or should I just stick with the 340 and perhaps stroke it to a 416?

I know in the end it's my decision, but I'm curious as to what any of you would do.

Thanks!

I like the stroker idea myself...

When I had my '68 Barracuda, I stroked a 340 to 416 and put a Comp Magnum 292H cam in it.  Loved it!  Might be a little too much cam for a stock style T/A exhaust with manifolds but I did get the increased flow performance mufflers.

I'll stick w/ the 340 and stroke it to 416.   I'll have to think about what cam I want to use.  I picked up a Lunati Voodoo cam 268/276 .494/.513 110 lobe that is close to stock with a little more lift - power band of 1800-6200.

The Comp Magnum 292H I ran in the Barracuda had a nice lope - 292/292 .501/.501 110 lobe and the power band is 3000-6500.  Definitely a little temperamental in a street driven car.  But way fun when you stomped on it!!  I think it might suffer a little with the stock 340 manifolds.

Maybe I should look for something in the middle.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a big block vs small block air cleaner base plate difference . I think they are the same as I recall when I was looking. You can get the carbs new for the 440. I think only the center one for the 340. You can re-jet the outer ones if you get the 440 style for the 340.

I already have all the 340 carbs so I'm good to go there.

The 340 is the only engine that fits an AAR or T/A IMO, even a clone or one of none build. MY dream is to stroke my 340 to a 500hp 408, maybe someday.  :('

I`m currently running a Comp XS274 in my 340, 3000-6500, decent idle and perfectly streetable IMO. I previously ran an Engle 292  (forget the other specs) that had a pretty choppy idle and didn`t make power till 3500 but was still going at 7000.
