Hello All -

I've have an NOS Set of exterior door mirrors that I'll be painting for my 70 Cuda in the next few weeks. The mirrors came in the boxes painted with a light coat of grey primer and tape over the glass (driver's side only).

I've been told that on original factory painted cars, the driver's side mirror was painted disassembled, meaning the mirror "pedestal" was painted separate from the mirror "cup", and then assembled after painting.

The passenger side mirror was painted as a complete assembly, meaning the "pedestal" was assembled to the "cup" before painting.

Has anyone else observed this on factory painted exterior mirrors?

The person that I think would know would be David @MMC Detroit   I like to paint them together so they match perfectly.    :bigthumb:

I can't speak for the passenger mirror and as I can't find mine.  :pullinghair:  However, I believe you are correct about the driver's side as mine was painted body color inside the mirror housing and that would have been difficult to do with the mirror and adjustment mechanism in place. That's assuming yours is a driver's side remote mirror controlled by the little joy stick on the driver's door panel as mine is.

It matters to the owner, which is why he asked.   :alan2cents:

Rob, I'll check some of my mirrors today and see if I can help you.

That's what I thought too, usraptor. It would make sense that the drivers was apart because it would be really hard to paint behind the glass. It's going to be more difficult to paint the passenger side because the glass is already installed and cannot be removed. I'm guessing my painter will need to move the glass side-to-side to spray behind it as best he can.

Thanks, Tom. Please take a look and let me know what you find out.

I've painted a few mirrors together and they are pretty easy.  Your painted will not have any trouble at all making them look awesome!
