I sell parts sometimes on eBay and it seems that more and more states are requiring eBay to collect taxes to be given to the state. My state of California recently did this. This may influence how much a bidder is willing to pay. Perhaps not too much on small items but large ones probably yes.

I am curious to know though if this will apply to cars sold through eBay. Has anyone looked into this or have good information? I'm selling a car now and adding $2000 in taxes will probably cause bidders to lower there bids accordingly.

It has slowed down my ebay shopping for sure. Here in Canada Ebay makes money on the deal with their "global shipping program" which you prepay up front the taxes duties etc.... which is ok but what's NOT OK is they charger more than what's required by the government.

I typically don't offer International shipping because it's such a hassle but when I do, I just figure it out on my own rather than use the eBay global shipper thing. I figure eBay is already making too much money off my stuff. In many cases, the shipping company makes more than I do and ebay also makes more than I do. Basically I get a third of the profit off of my work. And I could raise the price but the reality is people are smart shoppers and factor in all costs.

Anyway, I was just wondering how this will work with cars. I know if I buy a car out of state and bring it in, my local dmv is going to try to tax me on that purchase price. I haven't had to fight with them before because I was never taxed prior so I just paid it. You can bet I would fight though if eBay took out taxes and my dmv tried to tax me again.

I'm not sure how it works with cars.  On other items, the seller doesn't have to do anything about the taxes.  E-bay adds the tax on at the end of the sale and pays the state directly.  The seller doesn't have to deal with the tax and probably doesn't even see it listed on their E-bay receipt.

Ya not sure how that would work with a car?  I have noticed most places now charge taxes like Jegs and Summit that didn't do so a short time ago. must be a new gov reg?  I had some parts sent to my inlaws in NC and had to pay taxes....

Over the years, I have noticed as a buyer that you do not see the taxes until you go to complete the purchase and pay. I suppose in time, a buyer will just understand that any purchase made through eBay will be adding taxes.

I don't have an issue with taxes but it doesn't seem right to charge taxes on some dirty used garage sale item.

In New York you pay the sales tax at the DMV when you register it, no matter what county you buy it in. My brother brought a car in from California, had payed the taxes and drove it for some time out there. went to title and register it here and because he owned land here he had to pay NY sales tax.  :looney:

I just hope tax isn't collected on the car I have on eBay now. I'd hate for some buyer to have to go through that headache. If we are lucky, the deal will happen after the auction ends and fails to meet reserve.

Growing older is mandatory...growing up is optional.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

The state always gets its taxes. Just saying. LOL. They may let it slide for a bit, but they arn't gonna leave money on the table.

As for me, taxes and shipping play a role in what I buy. It may or may not make a difference in a sell depending on how much it is, and if I can get it locally. I hate when taxes aren't up front. First of all, it should be in your face that your paying for taxes, plus no one like to find a "deal" only to find out at checkout that you gotta pay much more. Taxes arn't the sellers fault of course, but it does affect what I purchase.

I was talking about things OTHER than cars purchased on E-bay.  The seller doesn't even see the taxes listed on their receipt.  They just see the amount the buyer sent them for their item.  The tax is a separate transaction that E-bay takes care of themselves.

They don't call them FeeBay for nothing.  Sad.

It's the states that passed laws requiring them to collect the taxes.  I'm sure it's a big PITA for E-bay to do it.
