The latest My Car Story video is interesting.  It features a FE5 Hemi Challenger that appears like it was accidently painted B5 blue, then repainted to the ordered FE5, with evidence of the underlying original B5 paint showing in several locations.
If indeed that is what happened, they got it repainted pretty fast.  The fender tag shows a SBD of 04/02, yet the door tag shows March which means it was completed a little early!
Anyone ever see a car before with evidence of a factory paint snafu like this?

I've never seen the wrong color sprayed and then the correct one over it  in the engine bay,  I've seen several interiors  where it looks like they emptied the gun lines of the previous color, then went on to the new.
Hard to miss when the floors were orange,  and the car green. That was the most dramatic,  but I've seen numerous 2 tone interior floors.
If you see pictures of the paint line, things were pretty messy.

It is my understanding that cars were run in batches by color, not a case where they'd change over the paint for each body as it came down the line. Just because some cars had consecutive VIN numbers doesn't mean they ran in that order down the assembly line. So how'd that body which was supposed to be painted red get mixed in with a group slated to get painted B5?
There were 2 or possibly 3 Superbirds that accidentally got painted FK5, a color not available on Superbirds.
In that case the decision was made to build them that way, not repaint the correct color.
The hemi Challenger had a red interior and likely was an ordered car, so leaving it blue wouldn't have been an option!

I find it fascinating how things were down 50 years ago - not just Mopar but you have to figure most manufacturing was probably similar with lackluster quality controls considering the technology at the time - amazing anything got built!

It does seem a little hard to believe, but with the color codes so close together I could see it happening -  but I am a noob so  :dunno:

I checked my files for the JS23R0B294518 Fender Tag and found the Broadcast Sheet. Always FE5.

I know the car and owner here in St Louis. The paint sure does look original to me ... or at least very old dating back to the '70's. Other than the engine compartment and cowl, there's no trace of blue anywhere on it. Sure, I didn't peel back the carpet to check the floorpan, but other areas that are more accessible like the underside and inside the trunk don't show any blue.
Cheers!

Tis' better to have owned classic Mopars and lost than to have never owned at all (apologies to Alfred Lord Tennyson)

There are plenty of other factory screw ups out there so why not? E5 and B5 look similar at a quick glance so it could of got partly painted  before someone caught the mistake.
