Hey All,

What size are the screws that hold the block-offs in the hood inserts on the R/T hood? They definitely look to be a machine screw thread. #8 seems too big. Are they #6? I don't have any to try. The previous owner cut out the uprights on my inserts so I have no screws from them. Also, are they a standard pan head screw? I will be ordering them from AMK, so want to be sure before I make the purchase. Thanks
Kevin

Thanks headejm. I ran a #6 tap through the holes and at first it felt snug, but after fully going through, I felt a little wobble. So they must have been corroded and shrunk from paint build up. I then ran the #8 through. Good thing #6 and #8 are both 32 thread pitch.  :D

EV2RTSE

I bought a used original pair at a swap meet a while back and these were what came with them-

I thumbed through my MMC Detroit Judging Guidelines and Fastener books and didn't see any references to the shape of the screw heads (I probably missed it).  The attached image is from a 70 Challenger with 6300 miles.  I'm assuming the block off plate screws are original but I could be wrong.  You may have to download the image and zoom in to see the screws, they look like pan head Phillips to me.

avatar_EV2RTSE if possible, would you post a pic of the block off plates you bought?  I'm missing the originals and wondering how they compare to the aftermarket offerings.

Here's your picture edited. It's not uncommon for for someone to use hardware that's readily available when "unique" ones are missing.

Cuda rallye hood scoop inserts also use unique screws with that small head. Similar to what EV2RTSE posted but longer.

avatar_Jay Bee, thank for resizing the image.  Are you saying the image avatar_EV2RTSE posted is the correct screw for both Challenger and Cuda/Barracuda?

I've never owned a Challenger so I have no idea what those screws look like. All I'm saying is the screws EV2RTSE posted look like the ones that were once on my Cuda's  '71 - '74 rallye hood inserts, only his are shorter.  I've since replaced my inserts with correct 1970 only Cuda ones.  (1970 Cuda/Barracuda inserts didn't use screws, they were fastened from the back).

To me it would make sense to use the same type of screw for the same type of application. The countersunk ones make a cleaner look. FWIW, Cuda's used wellnuts too.

Well nut in place explanes why I'm having such a hard time taking the screws out. The well nuts are most likely spinning....Joe

I really hate highjacking someone's thread but I feel I need to shows these to 1970 cuda Joe.

Great....more parts that are wrong. Good things it's not a numbers car. What holds the plates into a 70? I think all information shown here is helpful John...Joe

By "plates" I hope you're referring hood scoop inserts. The second picture shows that. The 1970 Cuda/Barracuda uses Pal nuts on the rear studs. The actual whole scoop has to be removed from the hood to get at them. That's probably why they went to screws later on. Gotta wonder how many inserts fell off from studs breaking or whatever, Kinda like the same scenario with rear license plate light housings.

No worries Jay Bee. This is a great informative thread for both Challenger and Cuda.  :bigthumb:

I have done a search for a screw that comes close to the screws shown by EV2RTSE and Jay Bee with no such luck. Has anyone else seen anything similar? I'm going to use the black oxide pan head screws, but the head is still fairly proud. Original style would be less noticeable for sure.
