The LA engine is truly awesome , the 340 or 360 can make awesome power with minor mods & good compression

They were a great package. Many a big block was taken down by an A-body with a 340, 4 speed, gears and a good driver. They were easy to launch too with their soft lowend torque compared to a big block which took a little talent (and patience) to launch without blowing the tires off.

Years ago I ran my 340 s 4 spd Cuda against a ram air GTO 4 spd , I made him look silly , left him a long way behind
