I found this locking gas cap in the trunk of my car when I purchased it. I believe it was the locking option that came with the car from my research. The question is, there was no key with the lock, I took the core to a locksmith and had a key cut. It works fine and allows me to turn the key from "Push" to "Lock", but when it is in the lock position, the button can still be pushed down witch activates the tabs and would allow it to be removed.

Does anyone know what I am missing here?

I am amazed at how much info is here, and how much help you can get

I am not sure what you would be missing. It looks complete to me. I have factory locking gas caps under the flip caps on both of my 70 R/T S.E. Charger and 70 R/T S.E. Challenger.

Look closely at the part circled in red.  The small perpendicular tab is broken off.

Here's the replacement offered in the post referenced above

Another question would be about replacement seals, the ones on this are pretty dried out and crusty.

There is a discontinued NAPA locking gas cap that has a seal you can harvest.  It's not a 100 percent visual match but it's pretty close and works well.  You'll have to search ebay and other sources to find one though.

Which type of cap do you have?
What is stamped on the bottom of the cap, see pic

Thanks for the tip, also read about a Stant brand that is close and have one on the way, will keep this in mind I'd the other doesn't pan out.

It is the "Not Vented" version, what's the story on that?

Non vented is correct for 70.
Vented is used in 1971 models and 1970 with N95

Received replacement locking piece from 7 @71ChallRT, worked like a charm. Also secured a locking gas cap as posted above by avatar_Floyd @Floyd, old one was pretty crushed.

It appears that when you strip the cap of all the screws and what they hold in place that the remainder of the cap is a three pieces.

-Yellow zinc plated pot metal front piece that says "Lock" and "Push"
-Zinc plated steal cup piece
-Yellow zinc plated pot metal back piece

Has anyone disassembled this further to this point to have these three pieces separate?
