To be upfront, this question is regarding my 1970 V code Roadrunner.
However, from the research I've done, the same question will apply to E bodies, so I'm asking.

The car was missing the original exhaust when I bought it (1975).
The fender tag is coded both N42 for Bright Exhaust Tips, and also N97 for Noise Reduction Package.
From everything I've read, the N97 was for California and the exhaust should have turn down tips.  Yet the tag has N42.

Anyone seen this before?  I thought maybe N97 might supersede N42, but that makes no sense whatsoever from a production standpoint.

I see now this was addressed this past August, and 6bblgt gave this response:

on a '70 e-body:
CA required N95 (ECS Emissions) all engines "fuel vapor related"
CA required N97 (noise reduction) 440+6 & HEMI engines ONLY - this requirement "DELETED" the N42 "bright exhaust tips"

in this post:  https://forum.e-bodies.org/cuda-and-challenger-general-discussion-roseville-moparts/2/a66-challenger-registry/14742/msg229463#msg229463

I know he knows his stuff, and it's not clear but I think he is saying that you could have both codes on the tag.  Correct?
I still find that odd.  If the car was going to CA and was going to have N97, why would it have been coded for N42 in the first place?

Maybe I shouldn't be depending on logic.

B-body questions are over there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>    :haha:

on a '70 b-body: N42 "tips" were OPTIONAL on Road Runner, GTX, Super Bee & R/Ts
CA required N95 (ECS Emissions) all engines "fuel vapor related"
CA required N97 (noise reduction) for 440+6 & HEMI engines -
this requirement "DELETED" the N42 "bright exhaust tips" that were INCLUDED with the HEMI engine
& used the "shielded non-fresh air, air cleaner" on all 440+6 with and without N96 & HEMI
but N42 was still available on 440+6 cars, if ordered the car would receive HEMI resonators to achieve the "noise reduction"

:takealook:  here's a CA emission (E.C.S.) 440 6-BARREL '70 GTX I used to own with N41 - N42 - N85 - N95 - N96 - N97 ****** more on your Road Runner?  fender tag pic?

6bblgt,
Here is my tag.
I've got an Air Grabber, so from your post it would have the tips and resonators, correct?

And, in keeping with the cover of asking on this site, would this equally apply to E bodies?

Robert

PS.  BTW, on the original registration, the date first sold was 12/23/1969.  This was a hell of a Christmas present.

CORRECT!
different strokes rules for every-body 1970

since all dual exhaust e-bodies had resonators & mufflers - and the SHAKER hood air cleaners were all the same - the only change to appease CA was to DELETE the STANDARD "N42 - CHROME TIPS" on "E87 - 440+6 & E74 - HEMI" engine OPTIONED cars and tag it "N97 - NOISE REDUCTION" - e-body "end of story"

"E74 - HEMI" engine OPTION on b-body in CA with "N97 - NOISE REDUCTION" added the shield to the INCLUDED "N96 - AIR GRABBER/RAMCHARGER" (non-Charger) & DELETED the INCLUDED "N42 - CHROME TIPS". these all had dual exhaust with a H-pipe, mufflers & resonators.

"E87 - 440+6" engine OPTION on b-body in CA with "N97 - NOISE REDUCTION" added the shield to the OPTIONAL "N96 - AIR GRABBER/RAMCHARGER" if equipped (non-Charger)
with out "N42 - CHROME TIPS" 440+6 b-body, these all had dual exhaust with a H-pipe, mufflers & turndowns.
with OPTIONAL "N42 - CHROME TIPS" 440+6 b-body, this INCLUDED "HEMI resonators". these all had dual exhaust with a H-pipe, mufflers, resonators & tips.

 :unbelievable:  but wait -
your Road Runner's VON 095252 on a Y14 "ordered" car
my former GTX's VON 095187 on a Y14 "ordered" car -  should put these two V-codes in the same vicinity when new - possibly the same dealership

  so, what do you know about your car's early life - dealership?  where did the original owner live?

these are the only other 2 "095xxx" 1970 Plymouth b-bodies I'm aware of: (I don't know where in CA they are from ??)

Unfortunately, I know nothing about the original owner of the car. The guy I bought it from was the second owner, and he was stoned at the time I bought it in May of 1975.  All I know is that the original registration listed date first sold as 12/23/1969.
At one point, after having not been running or registered for a while, I contacted the DMV to try and find that information, but in California, at the time, they only kept records for three years after the car was no longer registered and then deleted the records.

Funny story about this car. It was originally advertised in the LA Times as a 1971 440 6 Pack Roadrunner for $400. I called the phone number and got a poor stressed woman who somewhat testily said, "No, I don't have a Roadrunner for sale, please don't call again".  Her phone had been ringing off the hook for days.

I guess there were only two people in Los Angeles who thought to call the newspaper and see if they got a corrected phone number from the seller.  There was, so I called the guy and went to see him.  When I got there, he was quite stoned, and I found that it was actually a 70 Roadrunner.  I was disappointed it wasn't a 71, but I later realized I like the 70 better.  He had hit a fire hydrant (can't imagine why) but fortunately it only did damage to the hood grill and bumper, no damage to the front of the unibody.
I gave him a $50 deposit, and agreed to return on Saturday.  Fortunately, I was very young and very excited so I showed up more than a half hour early.
He came to the door - not stoned - and said, "Who the hell are you?"
"I'm the guy who bought your car", I said.
"No you didn't" he responded.
So I showed him the receipt that I had that he had signed, and his eyes got real big.
He had sold the car to two people, and the other guy was also supposed to be there within the half hour.
I gave him the remaining $350, and we rushed to wheel the car out of his driveway and onto the trailer we had rented.
Last we saw of him, he was shuttling his very pissed off girlfriend out of the house, telling her they had to get the hell out of there.
Adding a final bit of adventure, my friend who had the pickup and had helped me rent the trailer asked me for the tiedowns. I said, "What?"
Now I had another pissed off person on my hands. We put the car on the trailer, put it in first, set the emergency brake as hard as we could, and tied the Dana onto the trailer with my belt.

It's amazing what we got away with when we were stupid kids.

Sorry for the long post, but to this day that story makes me smile. And you did ask for the early history.
