Tis' better to have owned classic Mopars and lost than to have never owned at all (apologies to Alfred Lord Tennyson)

My first thought would be to ensure the shifter is adjusted properly.

If you hold the shifter in first or reverse in an inclined position, does it still pop out?

If so it's probably not in the linkage.

If so, my 1st guess is the transmission mount is broken or the rubber bushing is worn out, or it could be a motor mount failure as well. Causing the engine / tranny to move enough to push the linkage out.

If those are OK, then its in the transmission, u-joints or drive shaft

If you need to adjust the linkage, you can download the 1973 Plymouth Service manual on this site for the instructions.
