Has anyone ever did one? Any suggestions about going about doing one. Is there a rebuild kit that better than another one? Any tricks?

Thanks Ken

It's as easy as falling off a wet log. Really nothing tricky at all. You're basically resealing it. You'll need a P S pulley puller.

I went through my Saginaw pump.  Super easy.  If I could do it, so can you.  I just got a seal kit from Advance Auto.  I got the kit that comes with a new shaft bushing as well.  The only special tool you'll need is a press to remove/install the bushing.  You might be able to just pound it in and out.  The hardest part for me was removing the reservoir without denting it.  The large reservoir O-ring had a pretty good grip.

Mine originally came with the bolt-on pulley.  The press-on pulleys are a PITA.  I tried getting one off and totally destroyed it in the process.  Hopefully you have the bolt-on pulley.

Great thread. I'll just hop on this thread because I posted about this and didn't get anything answered.

Good to know it's easy. Is there any published specs, such as shaft play, etc? I'd like to measure everything before and after so I can assure that my "knocking" noise goes away by doing a rebuild.

Good to know that advance auto has the rebuild kit.

I measured about a 1.8mm offset between PS pulley and crank pulley. I have no idea if this is "within tolerance or not". I can assume that it's not great, and I believe there are some shim kits out there that can mitigate this.

Thanks for the info. Do you remember the part number for that kit with bushing. Ken

Chryco Psycho

I have used a number of Omega seal kits with good results

No, I just looked it up on their website.  They showed a kit with just O-rings and then one with the bushing included.

Convert, can you take pictures along the way. Can you also measure your shaft plunge movement, as well as your pulley offset to the rest of the pulleys?

btw, Wissau Wisconsin...I've been there. I moved my aunt from there in a big Uhaul truck while towing her car. Took me 4 days to get back to the west coast.

Keep that Cuda away from the salt! :)

Here's why I am rebuilding mine. https://forum.e-bodies.org/gallerypics/videos/2011_02_02_19_12_51_15.mov

You can see that my PS sits about 1.8mm behind the other pulley.

I don't have a puller. I'll probably ever only use it once. What type of puller do you guys recommend for an old Saginaw pump?

I took my pump to a local independent shop that works on a lot of different cars including older ones to have them use the proper pulley remover.  It cost me ten bucks for them to remove it and put it back on.  I did the kit install.  I tried heat and a good three jaw puller and it just laughed at me.  There are several videos out there if you google.  I think the tool looks like this one.

You should be able to borrow/rent one from Autozone, O'reilly, etc very cheaply too.  This shop was closer than a parts store for me.

Thanks! Sounds this calls for the right tool for the right job. With "kit install", do you mean the rebuild kits that have been posted here?

FWIW, a friend just sent me this and said this will work on the Saginaw. It's dirt cheap and prime-enabled: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N3461S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

No point renting at that price!

Popped the nut off, and now waiting on the pulley remover.

Here's some teardown pics. I didn't even have to use a wrench for the pulley puller.
