Tips/Tricks on restoring free air vent

Looking for tips/tricks on cleaning up this free air vent.  There was a huge mouse nest in there when I pulled it for who knows how long.  Full of feces and urine I don't even want to run it, unless i can get it cleaned up like new.

Also just thinking about plugging the whole since I will run some form of vintage AC down the road, curious if that is just my best option at this point?

I'd blast the metal flap or soak it in something like evapo rust and scrub the outside with a good cleaner and see how it looks. I wouldn't eliminate it.

Depending on where you live..."fresh" air is "free" although we probably get taxed on it some how 

The rusty part isn't really seen, once you tackle the rust just get a good coat of black paint on it....I wouldn't paint the plastic at all, just use a good cleaner, maybe paint the front metal bracket silver.

free.....fresh.... haha too many fumes in the garage today, i need to go outside and get some free fresh air.

I'll give some of those a shot, i just wanted to make sure I got all of the toxic crap off of it, then cover it in a coat of paint or something.

Just touching on the Vintage Air comment, you will still probably want a fresh air vent on the drivers side with Vintage Air.

I use mine to manage humidity in the car since the VA box only runs on recirculated air. In certain weather, I want the a/c on and crack the vent to balance the better.
