Storing Original Vehicle Documents

 After reading the resources for the 10 VIN  when buying an E-body, I decided to pull the original vehicle documents from my car's glove box and look them over closely. I have probably only had these out a few times since 1972. Anyway, here's what I have besides the 10 VIN documents mentioned. I do keep copies of both build sheets and a copy of the original window sticker in the car to show when asked if I have them. The originals I keep in a safe.  Should I be keeping these original documents in the glove box as I have  since 1972 or should I make copies and safely store the originals elsewhere? Thanks for all the great info and helps you all provide.

Take high quality scans, print them and put the printed scans in the vehicle.  That way even if something happens to you and you're not able to make sure the documents go back with the car at least the next caretaker will have good high quality printed scans.  I normally put printed copies of documents and a USB flash drive with the original scans on it and restoration photos on it.  I also put printed scans of build sheets back behind the seats of sheets I remove from cars.  Might someday be fun for someone to find the printed sheet. 

Store the originals in a safe place.

Cody is dead on. I scanned all mine so I have a digital file of them and made color copies and kept them in the car and put all the originals in a safety deposit box in my bank.

I don't have a scanner so I take good photos of them, re print them and laminate them to display at car shows so people can take a look. Thee originals stay in a filing cabinet in the house. Most of those fireproof safes are bogus anyways and if the house burns down the car goes with it.

  The car is in my shop. The original broadcast sheets and window sticker are in the house in a safe. All these years and many car shows and I never thought about the documents in the glove box. I like Cody's and other's idea to scan and store the originals. I do keep scans of the broadcast sheets and window sticker in clear pages in a notebook in the car. I never thought about putting high resolution scans back in the seats. Anyway, good ideas. I assume the documents in my photos are the typical documents that came with all new cars. Interesting to read some of them now, especially the emissions document. Thanks again.

 Also while going through my cars documents, I found the Consumer Information document for a 72 Challenger I owned until about 1983 that I sold in Bremerton Wa. If this car is still in existence, I'll gladly send the document to the owner for the cost of a stamp. The VIN is JH23G2B408336. It was a forest body with green interior, 318 automatic. Anyone with information on this car can PM me here.

If you don't have a scanner, most office supply chains have a department for doing scans and reprints for cheap. Bring a thumb drive with you and get the scans backed up and in a safe spot. Mine are in a high end gun safe as well as diditally backed up. Cody says it well.
