Interesting.  I have seen pictures of cars with them, but always figured an owner chromed them at some point in the car's life.

That's exactly what I have. I just checked my part numbers. But again, my blacked out area is no where near that visible. Basically if you took a straight edge vertical from the top of the insert to the bottom, that's where my black out is. 
So are these different part numbers from original inserts?

Same here. That's what I thought happened to mine. Somewhere in my cars life it was owned by a serious mopar lover. They scrounged an awful lot of correct pricey parts.
