Anybody know of a good source for something resembling an original 6x9 speaker for AM only (R11) ?  Like many of us back in the day, one of the first things to go was the crappy AM radio & stock speaker!  I have the radio but no rear 6x9.  Also my broadcast sheet specifically says R11 is 1 rear speaker only - I've had some people debate me on that so feel free to give your opinion!

R/T's 4 R/P

Do you have the rear speaker control?
You could have gotten an R11 AM radio without any rear speaker and only the dash speaker

I will add, the speaker is covered by the grill, and cannot be seen, so no one will know the precise "look" of the speaker you're using.

The OEM speaker was a paper cone with fabric surround.  It did not hold up well to the sun's heat or UV filtering through the speaker grill.

Back in the 1980s when I replaced that speaker for the first time, the coaxial speaker was pretty popular.  This looks like a cone speaker, with a tweeter stacked on top of it.  I found the grill would not lay flat using this type of speaker.  A visit to Circuit City resolved this by choosing a speaker with modest fidelity.

You may have to pay $$$ for an OEM-looking reproduction paper 6x9 speaker.  Many of the speakers they make these days are made of polypropylene.  I recommend going with one of those, unless you really set on the paper OEM-type.

My car is also a single-speaker R11 car.  But the package shelf still has the speaker holes a prior owner cut.  Being a loud big block car, it seems a losing battle to fight engine noise with fidelity.

I do have the rear speaker fader knob on the dash and my car also has   both holes cutout on the package tray.  I was told by a pretty knowledgeable Mopar guy that the passenger side hole was there for the rear window defogger option.  I have some 6x9 triaxial speakers I used long ago but since the resto I'm just trying to see what I could use to make it appear original-ish.  I will never actually listen to it (I prefer listening to the engine) but I  had a judge at the Mopar Nats. deduct a point for it missing

I don't have a source for your speaker, however, I can tell you that the passenger side hole is not for the rear window defroster.  If you have the rear window defroster option there is a horizontal slit, with molding, that is in the center of the package tray close to the rear window.  In the 70s the rear window defroster was a blower that blew air under the package tray, in the trunk, onto the rear window to defrost it.

I believe the rear defroster did indeed pull (presumably heated) air from the passenger compartment through the passenger-side speaker hole, and out the slit in the middle of the package tray.

I didn't realize that R11 had a rear speaker, I always thought it was only the dash center speaker.

I stand corrected.  I was just thinking about the outlet and forgot about the inlet side.  :-[

To clarify, the R11 car would not normally have rear speakers.  Yes, I posted a picture with the speaker - sorry if this confuses.   The rear defrost still pulls air through the passenger rear speaker opening.  Even when a speaker isn't present.

Very helpful. so R11 by itself (what mine has coded) is just the dash center, but other codes bring the rear into play  :bigthumb:

R11 refers to the AM Radio.  Front center speaker-only.  The package tray would not have speaker cutouts unless..... it came with the rear defroster option.
