Was hoping to get some help with my 72 Challenger.
Initially the wire from my right hand brake light socket had broken.  I reconnected it assuming it would be fine. Still didn't work. So I have no rh brake light or signal. The other Brake light and front signals all work fine. Also all the parking lights work fine. I thought it might be the ground so tried grounding to the housing and socket still nothing. Unless I'm going insane I seem too have power at the the socket. I know the bulb is good I swapped it for the other side. But how can that be if there is power ground and a good bulb it should work. Could it be the socket? It's the original.
I read that it if there isn't power it could be the signal switch as brake light power goes through it.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Brian

Welcome Brian , maybe you joined a while back & just have not posted
The first thing you need to do is make sure you have power at the socket , do you have a multimeter ?
- if you have power you have a problem with the socket or ground at the tailight housing
- if there is no power then you need to check for power at the turn signal switch plug at the base of the column ,
- if you have power there then there is a problem with the wiring between the column & rear taillight socket ,
- if there is no power at the steering column plug then you have a problem with the turn signal switch , JSRestorations / Slotts can rebuild it or you can replace it , Standard part # TW7 . The turn signal switch sends power separately to each of the 4 corners of the car as you don't want the from lights to come on with the brake lights but you want to interupt both front & rear with the signal

Hi Neil,

Yep joined a long time ago, don't post much.
Thanks for the reply. I'm at a loss with this. So the socket is three wire power for brake/ signal, power for parking lights, and one on the socket ground. Originally the wire came off the socket. I soldered thatback on with a new terminal expecting that to be the end of it. Instead still no brake/signal. I seem to have power at the wire. Brown is brake/signal. I tried grounding from the socket wire got nothing. Is the wire to the socket ground?

Chryco Psycho

you should have 2 wires to the center of the socket , if there is a 3rd wire connected to teh side of the socket that would be a ground wire

Chryco Psycho

The running lights should be brown & turn green if it is left rear

It's RH. I've got brown and black with white tracer and grey to the socket. The grey wire just grounds the socket?

So it looks like a voltage drop problem. I don't have enough power at the socket to light the bulb. I have about 9 to 10 volts at the socket.

Chryco Psycho

Wiring diagram shows orange for brake & turn , brown for park lights but different years my vary
An incandecent bulb should still light at 10 v , I suspect ground problem but worth checking the connectors at the column & behind the kick panel to see if there is corrosion

 Thanks Neil,

Started checking voltage from the column back. By the time I was done and reassembled everything the power was back at the socket. I would say it was the disconnect plug to the rear harness. Anyway seems fine now. I know where to look. Thanks for your help.

Welcome @bandt   :welcome:

Sounds like you got it working.

Glad to help & glad you got it sorted out , a little di-electric grease can go a long way to preventing low voltage & corrosion at the plugs
