By installing a bypass from the alt to the start relay you will remove 90% of the load from the ammeter
using relays for the headlights removes even more , every modern car uses relays for anything with significant load & the headlights will be much brighter as well .

I just bolt both wire to one post on the ammeter .
anything over 60 amps must have a bypass installed
the voltage gauge can be fed from the ammeter wires

wow, that looks exactly  the way the harness connector in my 72 challenger looked, burned at the main power wire in the connector. I bought a new engine harness, repaired things from there up to the column. I like the idea of using relays for the headlight circuits, gets some of the current load off of that red wire, I'll be checking to see if that wire and connector gets hot once I get this thing up and running.

I've done the bypass on every mopar I've owned.  I'll do it to my new 73 rallye now too.  I just run a 10 gauge wire with a fusible link from the alt to the starter relay.  I just disconnect the alt feed wire and leave the ammeter gauge wires alone.
