Following up to my first post on the clutch replacement (thanks again) and now I have one more. I've been able to put around 1500 miles on her and noticed that sometimes it will "pop" out of second gear.

I know there are adjustments on the linkage, but a friend of mine said it could be the synchronizers and may want to send the tranny to a shop when installing the clutch.

Since I'm very new to the car and wanting to do it right, would love some support or suggestions from the team on your thoughts. See shifts great, just the occasional "pop out" only in second and it's not all the time.

Thanks in advance for everyones help!

I would adjust the 1-2 rod.Easy to do.If it still pops out then I would say it is internal.

Perfect and thank you, I got under the car last night and saw the rod you referenced. Is there any recommended measurements or baseline numbers of what that distance or adjustment should be?

My apologies to everyone if this is dumb question, just new to this side of the mechanical world and don't want to screw anything up, even though a easy adjustment.

Thanks again to everyone, appreciate the help!

The service manual has info on adjusting I believe.  I'll try to find it if you don't have the manual.  Basically, you put it in neutral, disconnect the rods at the shifter and then slide a rod through an alignment hole that runs through the shift levers.  The rod ensures the levers are in true neutral.  Then you can adjust the swivels on the shifter rods to the correct length and re attach.

Also, there are some rubber shifter boots that are so stiff they can contribute to the the shifter popping out of gear.  I had a really stiff NOS boot like that (probably a 80s-90s era part) and my car would pop out of second frequently.  I replaced it with a current repro boot and that took care of it.

Check out previous post on boots: https://forum.e-bodies.org/interior/6/floor-shift-boot-4-speed/4155/

Pics attached.  Also, depending on how original your setup is, the swivel adjusters are frequently immovable from corrosion.  Heat cycles and penetrating oil can help break them loose.

RUNCHARGER

If the car is still running and together give the 1-2 rod 1 full turn to engage second deeper and try that. If it isn't still running, pull the side cover off when you pull the trans and look at the the pointed engaging teeth on gear 2, they should come to a point and not be rounded. It may need a #2 gear or synchro.
