I think I've figured out the gas smell issue with my Cuda. Based on the picture I think it's the sending unit seal. Also, what is the wire that is stuck through the trunk hole? It's literally connected to nothing. The one that's attached to the fuel line.

The repro seals are not as thick as the original ones so that is the leak , there is supposed to be a ground strap that clips onto the sender & fuel line for ground that is missing , someone has added the wire as a ground

Someone's idea of a ground wire ?  It might be the sending unit itself and not the seal, only because the moisture looks to be creeping from everywhere around the tube and the electrical connection  :dunno:

Your best bet is to try and find an older sending unit with the rubber seal. I've tried multiple new ones and they all are junk. They don't seal correctly, don't read accurately, and are cheaply made.  :iagree:

The ground wire is jacked and it looks like that sending unit is jacked as well. It appears the tube has come loose from the body.

Either that or it's a blob of solder hard to tell.

I've never had an issue with the new seals if using a new sender and a new tank :dunno:

Thank you for all of the feedback. My thought is just replace the tank and not worry about it. Maybe that's extreme?

I would at least replace the sender, however the tank has over 40 years of crud in it, so it would be a good investment too. RockAuto has a real good price on Spectra Premium tanks and members here get a discount   :alan2cents:

If you are going to replace the tank, you might want to think about going EFI with an in-tank pump!  As you can tell, we have no problem spend other peoples money!    :takemymoney:  :takemymoney:

I'd heard that not only were the seals iffy, but that the lock rings were thinner and don't push as hard against that skinny seal and presto, you get a leak. I used a new Spectra tank and sender/seal and re-used my old ring and so far, touch wood, no issues. You could also use a sealant that was fuel proof if you were able to get the sender out and the mounting area nice and clean so that it could cure before refilling. Just my  :alan2cents:

So what I'm being told is that the tank is not original and looks relatively new.  I need to order the sending unit, gasket, and sealer.  Any suggestions?  I need to do this asap?

You may want to order the special wrench designed for the locking ring.  Just a few bucks more, and in my experience, gives a better seal than tapping the ring with a punch.

No no no...1/2" is likely way too big....a stock 318, 340, 360, 383 uses a 5/16 while a 440. 440+6 or Hemi uses 3/8" ....1/2' is for really modified cars that have a 1/2" fuel line front to back :alan2cents:
