Needing some feed back.  I had my 72 440 block punched 30 over and put in a set of Speed Pro 6 pack replacement pistons last fall.  I'm finally getting around to finish the assembly but wondering if the parts I have are going to work well or not.  Will my compression be too high if I use a set of closed chamber 516 heads with mopar steel head gaskets?  You probably want to know how far down in the hole the pistons are sitting but I haven't found all of my tools since I just moved.  Any rough guestimates would be appreciated.

What camshaft, what octane and what elevation. FWIW, the last 440 I built had similiar pistons, 915 heads (which I think cc about the same), it had a 284-528 Mopar camshaft and it ran hard as heck on 94 octane fuel. That was at 1000 ft elevation.

I'm on the beach here in North Carolina probably just above sea level.  We have 93 octane pump gas and I have a factory road runner cam.  Not sure if that is what I want to use but that is the starting point.  I wanted to have easy starting and power brakes and reliability.

My guess is that it should be okay. Only a guess though.

Change the cam you want 110* lobe separation 108* would be even better  .
The RR cam will be 115* lobe separation & will build too much cylinder pressure at low rpm
Quench is key too make sure you are no more than .060 between the piston & head

1 more thought , the chamber has a sharp ridge across the center of the chamber round that off with a die grinder so it is not hot & causing detonation .

I was looking at the Lunati Cams.  Do you think the 703 is the way to go? My car is also a 4 speeder.

Chryco Psycho

DO you want a flat tappet hydraulic ?
703 would be the minimum , 704 might work better for you

edison1970

Hydraulic.  I have a performer rpm intake, 770 street avenger for carb and the gears are 323s now.  I also have a set of 355s.

Getting back to putting the top end together.  I got the Lunati cam and decided I would put the recommended springs that were listed on the cam card.  The description of the springs I got said single spring but they don't appear to be.  Maybe someone can chime in who knows more about this than I do.  Now the valve seals don't work with these springs.  Is there a seal I can purchase that doesn't require me to cut the guide and fit inside these springs?

These days I like the Beehive springs, they fit without concerns about what valve seals or what rocker., they do a good job controlling the valves & they aren't to costly..... But you probably can't return what you have so you need to look at PC type seals...   In order to select  the proper part you need an accurate I/D of the springs & the O/D of the valve stem (.375) & the top of your guides...

 :iagree:
What you have is dual spring which might work with Teflon seals but likely you still have to trim the valve guides so the seals fit properly

RJChallenger

Is that not a single spring, with a inner damper?

Chryco Psycho

The top spring is a single with damper or inner spring removed , the lower spring is a dual with damper & you can see why the seal will not fit with the seal sitting on top of the spring

I went with beehive springs from Lunati that match their cam for rocker clearance. Still happy with them 5 years later....
