The kickdown lever should be tied all the way back to ensure full pressure on the full throttle shifts.

How aggressive are the shifts?  With a manual valve body under light throttle they would be firm, moderate throttle it will bark the tires & full throttle if the motor has any decent power it should leave rubber on the street at the shift...

On your oil leak, likely it's the rear band anchor pin which is trapped by the tail housing  just above the pan on the passenger side

Watteee

They are pretty firm. Haven't beaten on the car yet, since it's not insured yet! So i've only taken small trips around home.

But it does feel like it might chirp the tires if i step on it.

Decided to take the pan of this weekend, and i will see if i can figure something out.

I will take a look at the pin and see how it looks! Thinking that i might just take the tail housing of, new gaskets and bushing and then i can also check the governor..

If it is full manual it should not need the kickdown at all

Small update.

Took the car to the shop, and while driving it to the shop it started to vibrate a little. Once at the shop I dropped the pan, and it's full of brass shavings and some metal. So I'm getting the gearbox rebuilt next week, and my guy will check the valve body as well.

He thought it was rebuilt, apparently they made kits that still used the throttle cable!

RUNCHARGER

If it has some miles on it a small amount of metal is normal. Did you take a photo of it? I would check the u-joints first for a vibration issue.

The gearbox has been driven for 2-3 hours since the oil change (and there was no metal before). It was not a lot, but some of the brass shavings were big enough to make me concerned.

U-joints are brand new, rear end is rebuilt, wheel bearings new, new tires. So I'm pretty sure it's related to the gearbox. Hopefully I will get an answer this week!

Time for an update!

Sent the gearbox to my local transmission guy, and I also had the driveshaft balanced. 40g went on the driveshaft, so that was well needed!

The transmission looked great, the clutches and all the other things looked almost new. The valve body has been modified by the previous owner.

So I installed again, and took the car for a spin. Drove for a couple of hours, and checked the oil level and it looked good, but there seems to be a small vibration when taking off, but you only notice it if you take it slow. If you give it a little more gas it feels normal. And when you get up to speed, 60mph + there's a vibration that comes and goes, very fast vibrations (and not so much, just noticeably).

I also tried to go full speed for a couple of runs, and it chirps the tires at every shift. BUT! At one go I got a loud bang, and it felt like the whole drivetrain locked up for a second. Coasting down to a stop and I had a bumping sound. Once at a stop I turned it off and checked under the car, looked ok. So I decided to drive it back to the shop. When I started the car there was a bang, felt like something hitting the floor hard. Drove it back, and it felt great, shifts ok, feels ok and no noise.
Took it up on the lift and started it, same noise again, but can't seem to find anything. It also started to leak oil from between the engine and the transmission.

So I guess that I will be tearing it down again. Maybe the metal I found before was from the torque converter?

RUNCHARGER

How is the condition of the transmission mount? Does the driveshaft have shiny spots from rubbing the exhaust or anything else?

Might want to look at the rear axle....  Also on the vibration check your pinion angle....

Watteee

The transmission mount is new, but I will check it out. The rear axle has new bearings, and the gears looked fine when I changed the bearing. Also had a nice pattern when checking the mesh, and no whine or noise from the rear end when I drive.

There's no rubbing on the drive shaft.

I will take a look at the pinion angle tho, haven't checked that out.

Will try to get some more time on the lift this week, then I can run it in the air and check.

(we need a 2 cents icon)   I've had a LOKAR cable on NIKKI from day one... (over 12 years) never an issue. Just understand it does not take much adjustment to change shift points.

AGREED - if its a manual valve body forgetaboutit

sounds like a tranny problem to me.  Maybe it's the converter as suggested above.  Brass shavings should be a pretty good clue.
