741 in an E-Body

Hi guys, just a quick question, could a 741 8 3/4 chunk have come in a 70 or 71 E-Body Cuda/Challenger originally? Or were they all 489's for the most part by then? Thanks!

in 70 up it should be a 489 , so someone has swapped it in the past .

I have an e-body 3rd member 741 8 3/4 10" drums, one legger.  This I removed from a 74 318 Challenger. I was going to replace the rear end out after the spider gears in my factory 7 1/4"  decided to die. But a better deal came my way in the form of an 8 3/4" w/ 742, 3.23 sure grip unit. 11x 2 1/2" finned brake drum brakes.  This backs up my Slant6/ 904.  Couldn't pass it up for $50.00 drum to drum.

741 cases still were used in A-bodies in the early 70's. My understanding is that E-bodies got the 489 cases, but I'm sure that there were the exceptions.

Axle code 100 1970 E body 3.23 open 10" brakes 741 case 7260 U joint.... I had an R/T coded for that axle....  Never could figure that out....

My 70 Challenger is also coded 100 on the build sheet under the axle line.  Does that mean it's a 741? My car is also an RT with 3.23's.

I've had a few originals with 741 cases, so I wouldn't say this is an absolute.

741 differential cases were absolutely used selectively in 70 and up E-Bodies, as 318 cars, as well as 340 automatic cars, were actually considered low performance applications.


My 71 340 Cuda convertible, as well as my 71 318 Barracuda parts (original owner cars) car both have them. 7260 u-joints on both ends.

At the risk of derailing the original topic, how about 742 SG?  What body type/engine combos for that?

Thank you for the info everyone. Seeing my car is a survivor I was hoping this "could be original", the 741. If I ever take it out, I'll confirm the date coding on it. I appreciate the help.... No problem Floyd....the floor is yours......

it appears the 742s were phased out during the 1969 (most B & C-bodies) model year & replaced by 489s

focusing on '70 V8 w/8-3/4" Challengers: there appear to be 3 drive-shafts, all mention of them show 3.25" diameter & the larger 7290 (2-5/8") U-joints (front & rear?) - IS THIS ACCURATE?

is one of these driveshafts tapered with a 7260 & 7290 U-joint?

here are the part numbers for the SLIP JOINT (front) & PINION YOKE (rear) also shown in the "parts catalog" but not shown with specific applications

does the PP230 3-speed manual have the same output spline count as the PP833 4-speed manual transmission? (or is it the same as the 904?)

8 3/4 CENTER SECTIONS
The 8 ¾ came with several different center sections as listed below some are stronger than others:
657 1957 - 1964
741 1965 - 1974
742 1957 - 1968
489 1969 - 1974
The 489 was the Most common sure-grip available on E-bodies but the 741 was used on most v-8 cars. Sometimes a 7 1/4". on /six and 318 cars.
I have owned many E-bodies over the years and have had at least one of each of these differentials comes factory on the 1970 to 1973 Barracuda's and Challenger's I have owned.

@6bblgt Dan - I have the original driveshaft out of my 4/1 SPD T/A.  Part number on the shaft is 2883782, date "C 70".  It's tapered with a small u-joint up front and large u-joint at the rear.
