I have a center section lying around how do I tell what gears are in it and if it is a posi unit ?

Simple...   gear ratio is stamped right on one of the teeth... 

Turn the yoke...  if both sides turn in same direction then its posi...   if they turn in opposite directions its open..

Well I found that when spinning pinion both axles turn the same direction. So it is a posi unit but it appears to be 2.76 ratio . Did they make that combo or am I not seeing things correctly ?

Well I just did the math it's a 276

This is not a reliable method of determining whether you have a limited slip differential.

Every time you move the car...the yoke turns, and both sides go in the same direction.

If however...you arrest the yoke, and can easily turn one axle...AND the opposite side turns in the opposite direction, then you MIGHT not have a limited slip.

I have seen worn out limited slips that have sufficiently weak torque bias that they behave like open differentials at slow speed.

Post a pic, (or send one to jamesroney@yahoo.com) and I can try to visually confirm it.

Yes 2.76 was available from the factory

Yes, I had a Satty years ago with a 2.76

I have a 276 set for my Challenger. Awesome set for cruising from place to place. Not the best for the traffic light Grand Prix.

I will post a picture later today . 2.76 ratio is common but with a posi unit ? I have a 391 posi in car now with 727 trans  .

a sure-grip was OPTIONAL with any gear ratio
