Air Cleaner

It's funny how the parts you need that tend to be expensive. Maybe that could be its own post. Belt trim clips, rear finish panel, and air cleaner.

I don't have an air cleaner and I thought this would be a somewhat cheap part. $100 or so. Nope. They are fairly expensive. More desirable ones over $500. Luckily I don't have a dual carb or 6pack.

I saw another forum recommended buying a late 70's and cut off the snorkles. I briefly looked into air cleaners and I found 1970 340 challengers with no snorkles and with a single oval snorkle. I also saw some other pics but I think they were moded. Then I found other aircleaners from different years with none, 1, and 2 snorkles. I saw some with 2 same size and others with one big and one little. I saw some with out snorkles that looked very tall. So I have no idea what would be compatible.

Anyone have thoughts on air cleaners before I just go buy a cheaper open air cleaner.

Never understood the high price of admission on factory air cleaners.

Not unique to Mopar's though.. the factory setup for my Ford 390FE is in the same price range for a decent unit.

Unless you are hung up on the factory look.. just get one that fits and breathes well.

Use $450 you saved somewhere else.

If you are not going to be looking for judging, don't waste the money. Because that's exactly what it is. Air cleaner along with wheels were the first things everyone pitched in the old days.

Take it from someone who has been in this a long time, and has thrown away factory pieces like Hp exhaust, air cleaners and factory wheels. They are rare to begin with and lots were tossed away. What you are not thinking about is the inflation PLUS rare and desirable. In 65-70, my Dad was a fireman in Abilene Texas. His salary was about $700 a month. I helped him in his extra job mowing yards starting in 65. I was 9. Hamburgers were 5 big burgers for a $1. Cars were less than $4000 and hard to pay for. He started buying rent houses and would only make about $10 a month profit on a house. Now those houses are paid for and we make $1000 or more profit each month per house. However, a truck cost $60,000 plus! Almost every car I bought back in the 70's, I can sell the air cleaner for more than I paid for the car! Now the air cleaner for a 75 Buick is worth about $10. If you're looking for a 70 340 four barrel unsilenced air cleaner, they were offered two years only and that was 50 years ago. They are worth about $500 today. I have one.  Just think what they  may cost tomorrow. I bought an NOS b body tach in 83 for $200. That would buy about a 1/2 oz of gold  in 83. My bud is looking at the same tach right now to buy for $1500 for his 69 Charger RT 4 speed that he has $65,000 in. 1/2 oz of gold is only $950 right now.  I should have bought more tachs!

Ya I hear ya, Mopars are crazy but try building a AMC and looking for a 1971-73 401 AMC JAVELIN SST OEM COWL INDUCTION AIR CLEANER      I won't be buying one!

LOL. Yeah, I am leaning towards a cheap open air deal. Basically just a top and bottom to the air cleaner.'m not showing this car. I did ok at restoring it, but lets face it. The car is 50 years old and has battle scars. And honestly, I am not a huge fan of the look of the air cleaners usually.

I hear you on the price and rareity. These things weren't too pricy back in the 80s. Bought my car in '89 I think, possibly '90. But I didn't have money as I was just outta highschool. Funny how that works. Now I got money, but the things are too damn expensive. I remember finding a couple dimes on the street and buying candy bars, or taking back a couple bottles and getting some candy. Can't remember the last time I found $2 on the ground. LOL.

And i was searching craigs list and facebook market place  on a regular basis.  Then i found a guy on craigs list advertising parts so i contacted him on something and he said he had it so i kept asking for other items and he had them as well.  I made the trip to PA and  Got 6 or 7 needed hard to find parts. One being the elusive air cleaner. He said he had 2 and sold one to a friend and i got the other one for $300 . So my advice is keep searching.  I use "search tempest" it lets you search all craigs list ads for what ever item your looking for and how ever far out you want to go. I looked all the way to Ca. and hope they will ship.  if i found something.  here is a photo of the one i got

I've had my Fairlane over 25 years... crawled every bone yard in the area and could not lay hands on a decent factory GT air cleaner.

They still go $500-$700+ online.

Cost effective, work well, easy to get at everything once installed and no clearance or flow issues.

Replacement element can be had online for $10.

Change them every year regardless of actual mileage.

Until you can find what you are looking for or just bite the bullet and pay the $$, I recommend.

Lol.  It depends upon which air cleaner for sure. An A12 is worth more than an oz of gold now. Heck, I paid $1350 for my A12 air cleaner in 1983. But he gave me the entire car too boot! We should bought silver in March right after the virus killed the stock market. It has doubled in price. I just could not pull the trigger on that chance at the moment.
