I don't have an air cleaner and thinking I should probably pick one up. What would you all recommend for a '70 340. I'd like to get the stock one, but those things are too expensive. I have seen one single horn one for $125 which seems doable even though it isn't for that year. Not sure if it would be too restrictive. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately the 70 340 air cleaner is a unique piece as you have found out. I've scene a few this past year and they all were 350 or more and in need of work.

If your ok going the non original route I settled on a used 72/73 340 trap door air cleaner. They are a pretty slick unit that features a door on the bottom that opens under heavier throttle applications to suck in more air. I had an extra and put it on the 318 in my 70 convertible.  They are out there in the 150 to 200 range and are good air cleaners.

Thanks I will check them out. I would prefer to keep the same year, but right now I have things that $350+ could be better spent on. Options include single snorkle 340 air cleaners, some sort of open air cleaner(where you can see the filter), or your option. I was thinking of the K&N option or another open air cleaner one but my first thought was warm air and cold starts. I had one on about 30 years ago and I don't ever recall having issues starting as we don't get real cold out here. I might do the single snorkle but was a little concerned about not getting enough air through it.

In any case, I 'll look into the 72-73 trap door ones.

Thanks

Does it have to be a factory stock air cleaner?  The Mopar Performance cast air cleaners are being made again.  They are pretty nice and I have/had them on a few engines.
Contrary to the opinions of some, I am not dumber than I look.

I have this one, can get more pics if you're interested. I had it on my 70 till I found a dual snorkel I could afford. I think it is actually a pre-70 model but didn't see any numbers or dates, it fits a 4-barrel (mine is a 440). It is in pretty good shape.
I'd take $160, including shipping in US.

@erik70rt  No I am not totally concerned with original, though I would like the original. I was thinking of an open air cleaner similar to the Mopar Performance one. But those aluminum ones are too pricey for me.

@70vert Thanks for the offer. I am going to look at one of the ones that have the trap door if I can find one at a decent price if I can find one. I like the idea of getting more air into the motor. I might ping you if I can't find one. Thanks, I do appreciate it.

@tparker I doubt this is what your after but I'll offer it anyways. $75.

I know I have a trap door one but need to do a close inspection and test it.  Where you located?

Here are some photos of the trap door AC I freshened up and put on my 70 318.

It now looks more like a 72 and up 340 which is the direction i wanted.  They didn't make a 318 4 BBl so I feel its a representative of the what if scenario if they did.

For paint I used a matching color for Allis Chalmers farm equipment.  I have an original AC on my 73 and it is not exactly hemi orange.  For my purposes its close enough.

As these things tend to go it turned out to be a larger project.  I ended up pulling the radiator, pulling the carb, painting the top of the engine, and running in all new hoses and such.  End results I'm pretty pleased about other than the PITA aluminum thermostat housing leaking!

Good luck!

Buy a 70 dual snorkel air cleaner and take the snorkels off and you'll essentially have the 340 air cleaner.

Depending on which carb you have and your hood clearance requirements.
I've had good luck with with a drop base 14" generic housings on eBay while using a Edelbrock Air Gap intake and a Holley 650cfm 4bbl..
Not OEM or correct..  But it functions and breaths.    I just ordered a reproduction 1970 340 air cleaner decal that I'm going to slap on the lid for shits n giggles..

Clears all linkage on my case..

:iagree:  buy an inexpensive 14" air cleaner & save your money for a good deal on the correct one  :alan2cents:

Sorry all, I missed some of these posts. Thanks for posting. Great photos too.

@FE5CUDA I was thinking about that but wasn't sure. Those are a pretty penny too, So I didn't want buy it, rip it appart, then find it wasn't the same. LOL

@blown motor Thanks, but not quite what i am after. I would probably go bblack and was thinking about the K&N. But still thinking

@Shane Kelley I'm in California.

@FSHTAIL @6bblgt  This would be my second option.

@71383bee Thanks for the pics, that looks great! I have never heard of a "trap door" air cleaner, probably because I don't think I ever used a factory one back when I was growing up and driving Mopars.

It's an interesting concept, anyone know if they were ever tested/confirmed to perform better?

tparker

I never heard of them before this post either. I am interested in any data, bbut my thought is it would have a potential to be better performance in the sense that it COULD allow more air to the card. Like the carb butterfly valves that open when vacuum is strong enough. It allows more air when needed. Cool idea. My only concern is that it is getting warm air off the manifold, but that may not be any worse than from the air horn on the cleaner. I doubt it would be a lot cooler anyways.

Seems like a cool idea
