Carter carb
« on: June 17, 2018, 09:26:35 AM »
General question for you guys. I have a '70 Challenger R/T, 383 with a Carter AVS 4734S carb w/ECS. What is the air cleaner stud threads for this?  I bought a stud from a Mopar site, can't remember which one, but I think it's a 1/4-20 and it appears to be too small for the carb. Just won't stay tight. Hope I'm not dealing with a stripped situation. Always loose ever since I bought the car. Would to verify if I even have the correct air cleaner stud. Thanks guys.

a '70 383 Challenger R/T (335hp) would've originally had a HOLLEY carb

383 automatic - E & B-body - with ECS (N95)
orange HP engine 335hp
---------- Holley R4218-A ---------- part number 3418 543 on b'cast 43

the Carter AVS carbs were used on non-performance (330hp) applications for 1970

sorry, don't have an answer for the air cleaner stud

1/4 20 should be correct for the carb stud , locktite blue would work

@6bblgt The AVS on 1970 RT 383 engines is a bit of a mystery. Iíve seen more than a few with AVS, including mine. My broadcast sheet calls out a Holley but my (pretty much) undisturbed Challenger has an AVS installed. This topic has been discussed on here in the past and Iím wondering if the AVS carbs were installed by the dealers as a warranty replacement or installed on the factory floor due to Holley supply issues. My SPD is April 1970 and I believe Dodge was having quality/supply issues at that time. What do you think?

I think many Holleys were replaced, at a dealership under warranty or from a junk yard/parts store over the years

the seals on the Holley's fuel transfer tube, fail & leak

I've heard rumors of recall & replaced under warranty, but haven't seen a TSB or other paperwork to support it

it wasn't new or "special" basically the same HOLLEY carb was on every '69 440 c-body - I don't think supply was an issue
