I see Chrysler blue engine paint comes in two different tones, one labeled "early Chrysler blue." What years did they generally get the early paint and when did it switch to the brighter blue? The stuff I see on the shelves of the local parts stores is the later brighter blue color but it doesn't quite match my engine.

When I bought my '70 convertible, the engine was painted torquise by the previous owner when he restored the car.  After years of watching occasional discussions on the subject, I came to the conclusion that my engine was supposed to be "corporate blue", and when I had engine work done on the car 2 years ago, I had it painted the lighter corporate blue instead of torquise.
I believe the change in the shade of blue started with the '70 model year, but maybe someone else knows for sure?

The early one is more turquoise and I only find it in VHT. The other one is made by everyone and they all seem to be the same. The paint on my 71 is very close to the turquoise version but not a perfect match. I'm hoping that is just 15 years of heat cycles. The restoration shop was not a Mopar specialist so I suppose he could have used anything.

Yours should definitely be the 1631 code paint.. 69 was the last year for Turquoise...

I was afraid of that. Looks like it got painted the wrong color then. I'm in no hurry but someday down the road, I may pull the engine and give it a good cleaning and repainting then of the correct color. That would be a good time to really detail the entire engine compartment. It's the one area of the car that isn't quite as nice as the rest.

My 71 was a later (421) built motor so it was corporate blue. When I changed the cam I went back to a blue motor. I found a lot of differences in the  shades of blue being offered. Frank Badalson sells a quart that is the closes to original.

The blue on that motor looks similar to mine but I just can't seem to find the right shade. Probably a futile effort since there is no way for me to ever know what the restoration shop did all those years ago. It's actually a pretty small matter on my list of car things to do. The car is great in every way so final engine compartment detailing can wait until another day. At least I know now what it should be when I do get to it.
