Cold winter starts

Hi all Merry Christmas
When starting in winter, turn on key, push pedal to floor to close choke?
Then crank engine with no gas pedal?
Is this somewhat correct?
Also, should the carb flap be closed all the way or open slightly?

Bullitt-

  Ideally maybe, I see no purpose in turning the key prior to setting the choke, but every car seems to have it's individual needs.

Mine is two pumps, then turn the key with about 25% throttle. Works for me...maybe not for you.

If your running the OE style Thermoquad not quite all the way, there are several measurements/adjustments

I've had better info including adjusting the choke coil which is not part of the carburetor that I am not finding today
I have original service manuals for my '73... Reprints appear to be available that have better explanations and pictures than most I find online

Depends on temperature and how you have it adjusted. Mine takes 2-3 pumps hit the key and sometimes a bit of feathering the first 20-30 seconds depending how cold it is.

Never started mine in January... But.. I'm manual Choke so Give her a good pump/close choke at the same time. Let fuel atomizr for 45 seconds(ish  depend on weather). Hit the key,when she fires adjust choke as needed.

  Electric choke?....Youtube is full of videos of adjustments and adding electric choke to Edelbrock carbs

Cars and engines, like women are all different and you'll have to experiment to find your's favourite method. I've had 3 340's and each one of them liked a different starting procedure. One didn't want anything. If you touched the throttle it'd take 2-3 minutes to start. If you got in, turned the key without touching anything, it'd fire right off. The others not at all. I know it's not much advice, but experiment a bit and you'll come upon it's desired method. Good luck  :cheers:

You may already be aware of Gas issues. I assume most of the advice assumes you have fuel in the bowls. I have a truck starts fine with one or two pumps, if that, as long as I have driven it very recently. If I let it sit for a few weeks then it takes a bit of priming to get the fuel back into the carb. So I would do a quick check to ensure you indeed are getting fuel when you pump... other wise you can pump all day long. LOL.
