Working on two projects that will get 8 3/4 rearends but they need to be shortened, cars are being mini tubbed.

By chance can anyone tell me what is the minimum shortening cut on an E-body axle to get back to a wide enough

section to respline ? How about C-body axles, what would be the minimum shortening on those ?

Any axle photos by chance ?

It was published in a old Mopar Action magazine. But that focused on shortening axles that selected stock axles to shorten for A-body 51.4" flange to flange width rear ends. For that there were particular years C-body axles to pick from.

Are you going narrower than that? You will need to look at your current axles to see where they get back wide enough.

I think you might find buying new custom axles from Dr Diff or Moser a viable option. Being it's being Mini Tubbed with wider rear tires to hook up, you might want a stronger axle.

What shops are local to you for re-splining is a factor too.

C-body are essentially the same as E-body. Dr. Diff used to carry cut to length axles, they were splined fairly deep and you could nip the ends off them to get what you needed with enough spline. They were inexpensive too.

OK thanks guys. I may not be able to pull this off.

One more question: How much spline sticks into the side gear in the diff ?

1 1/2 inches, 2 inches ?

As far as I can tell he still supplies them

I have resplined axles before in the past. It's a bit of work maching wise that no one wants to pay for from a jobber type shop perspective . Another issue not mentioned is the splines are usually case hardened, when you cut them off you loose that....
I have all the equipment here in my garage to do it but I would buy new axles if available before I would respline my own.  :bigthumb:

Yes: Back in the Pro Street days a few of my friends shortened axles different ways, none of them seemed to work. That's why I took note of the Dr. Diff axles I guess. Back then it was about $500 for a pair of Strange axles and it was hard to come up with that. One friend had an Anglia and he had problems with his resplined Olds Axles, another friend shortened up some 9 inch axles in his Pro Street Torino and broke a few with the lil 351C in it. No problem with the Strange in the Dana 60 in my 64s though.
