Engine transmission numbers

Pulled the 340 out of the cuda  trans numbers match dash vin worked out casting number and engine number and so on engine was cast night shift all good .MY Question just below the engine on that little pad on the passer side what numbers am I looking for ? It has numbers but a very poor job the numbers are half on the pad and a little on the engine sump .  Question # 2. Should it have the same number as my trans a couple of letters and part vin OR SHOULD read the full vin it was ment to be matching engine and transmission. Any one else have poor stamping ? Thanks
