I have also generally modified the advance slots in the same way adding material to the inside of the slot which helps at idle .
I generally never use a timing light tho & tune any engine to what it what / runs best , so if the total advance exceeds 36* so be it , the cam has the biggest effect on the timing where the engine likes to run , but different fuels & altitudes etc also come into play . SO I always tune for max power / efficiency , might as well get as much as possible from the engine !!  :bigthumb:

Your mechanical advance plate will have the degrees of distributor advance stamped on it... revving the engine to 3000-3500 while watching timing light will confirm... do you have an adjustable light?

Here is the plate... 15 L stamp signifies 15 degrees dizzy advance, 30 degrees engine advance...

What you can do is adjust the timing so it runs best at idle & use a light to see where it is at , then run the engine at 3000 rpm adjust the timing to where it runs best again , what I do is advance until the Rpm quits increasing & goes  flat , more advance + same RPM , than retard the timing back to where it just drop RPM & take a reading there with the light now you know both ... maybe 18* at idle & 38* at 3000 RPM so you know you need a 20* curve to optomise both Idle & running Timing .

After reading thousands of posts on numerous sites I just believe in cutting to the point. Number one is that every one is assuming that the questioner understands their "advice".  That does not help, but only to confuse. The question tells me that we need more specific info to diagnose. Everybody wants to interject Making changes to weights, curves, welding parts etc... come on. You guys are the ones making it confusing. Find out right away what you are dealing with  obvious questions. Once you have all the info that you can get and determine what answer he is really looking for, then you can make suggestions. Some people hee haw around and some just get to the point. You don't have to like me. Just think about what you are telling people for advice . Remember to K.I.S.S . Most problems, questions have a simple answer.
