Ok so I went to pre-oil the 340 today using a drill and pump pre-oil drive shaft; I had prefilled the oil filter so I would not have to wait for it to fill; and I also hooked up a mechanical OP gauge just to see if I obtained any readable pressure.  After maybe 10 seconds or so with the drill at medium speed the gauge tube began to show oil and the gauge needle climbed to about 25-30 or higher depending on the speed of the drill.  I have to work alone of I periodically stopped and rotated the crank a few degrees and continued.  I was not seeing any oil at the rockers yet... when I glanced down to see a puddle of oil beneath the filter... it was leaking between the block and the filter adapter plate  :Thud:

I removed the filter, the plate screw, and the plate.  Everything looks fine, clean and "flat"; but the gasket a FEL-PRO #70522 which I installed new is "hard", no crush, and I wonder if that is the problem  ... It was that way when I installed it but I figured FEL-PRO knows what works  :dunno:  Is there another option for that gasket other than FEL-PRO  Or am I missing something?  I think the one I removed might have been cork.  Seems a thin gasket to be using a sealer but...

I had enough oil flow and pressure to begin filling the lifters, as some of the valves are open at least partially now; so I hope I am okay with oil flow and the rockers will be next to get oil.   I am using Royal Purple break in oil which is a non-synthetic 10W30 high zinc oil.

Thoughts; suggestions?

I really don't have any suggestions , I have had a brutal time trying to seal those myself at times .

This shows the thicker cork gasket goes against the block.... can anyone confirm?

That's the way I did it.  Sealed reasonably well.

Are you working with the 90 degree adapter or metal plate?

Had a 340 that leaked at the plate when I installed a high pressure pump. Tried different gaskets but found that I could stop the leak with a little extra tightening of the filter.

With the 90 degree adapter, the thicker cork gasket goes between the adapter and the mounting plate as shown!

Make sure that the large gasket has a clean surface on the block, and that it is seated properly... I use a light coat of grease to install in the block suface to hold it while mounting the 90 degree adapter.

The 90 degree adapter mounting bolt needs some extra tightening, from my experience, over what is specified...

Do you really need the filter to clear exhaust? I have TTI headers in my 340. My adapter leaked so I just took it off and put the filter right against the block. I had to go to a slightly shorter filter but it hasn't leaked since.

You may have a crack in the adapter housing itself, I chased the same issue replacing gaskets several times.

I am (was) using the flat flush with the block adapter plate.  Further investigation showed that the drilled center of the plate was coming in contact with the block casting before the outer (gasket) edge touched the block so it was not compressing the gasket much at all... no crush.  I fixed that with a socket and a hammer but still decided to replace it with a solid aluminum plate.  It did not leak during drill priming and I got about 75 psi oil pressure... and finally got oil to the rockers too

Thanks for all the tips and input guys!
