Guys, I have a stock 1972/3 low comp 340 with 95,000 miles on it, what's the max RPM it should rev to on WOT? I currently get to 5400 RPM, and it's like a rev limiter comes on, engine just breaks down and won't go past that RPM, lifter are worn, original motor internals

If it's a stock ECU the rev limiter is higher than 5400 rpm's. I know this because my 416 stroker engine will easily rev past 6000 rpm with the original factory ECU. As far as stock, my original 73 340 was out of breath at a little over 5000ish RPM.

I got a little carried away with my 73 back in 73 playing against a Road Runner and forgot to shift to 4th.
Was at 6000 when I realized my screw up but did not seem to hurt it. Stupid 18 year old.

6,000 shouldn't hurt a 340... I've taken the one I use to own to 6,800 many times...   Only spins to 5400??  Put some new valve springs on it... :alan2cents:

Yep: Your valve springs are done, you'll tag a valve unless you change them or limit your RPM. 6000 RPM for under $3000 is what the original ad read in 1968 or 1969.

Thanks guys, I was thinking valve springs as well, no big deal as a 408 W2 monster is about to go in

Well that 408 will be fun.  Save the money from fixing the 1973 340 and invest in a second set of tires for the 408. :bradsthumb:
