Neutral switch?

Just put back together my 73 challenger after rebuilding the front end, rear end, and transmission.
I've got a fully charged battery and all the lights, wipers, etc are working but when I turn the key I get nothing.
I'm guessing I've got a neutral safety switch issue; is the neutral safety switch attached via a link to the clutch pedal on the inside of the firewall? Got under there with a light and noticed a switch which connects to the clutch pedal shaft via a plastic keeper; looks like mine has busted free at some point.
Curious if this might be my problem?

if you ground the terminal on the starter relay you bypass the switch. but it will start in gear that way!  :alan2cents:

So thinking this through, I thinking although the clutch switch to clutch pedal is broken, I don't think that is actually my problem.
The clutch switch is only for if the car is in gear, so you can start it in gear with the clutch depressed; however I am trying to start my car in neutral so that shouldn't be a factor, correct?
Can anyone walk me through a way to troubleshoot my neutral safety switch on the transmission? The tranny is rebuilt, the switch is new and the wiring harness from the firewall to the transmission is new.

If we're talking a manual transmission you DO NOT have a neutral safety switch on the transmission, you have a reverse light switch.

Under the hood on the starter relay, the lower terminal with the green wire coming from the clutch switch has to be grounded in order for the starter to work. When you depress the clutch pedal that switch completes the ground circuit. making sure the car can't go anywhere.

You can take a wire and ground that terminal on the starter relay and it will start no matter what gear you're in.
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

Thanks Anauto, you are correct; I am mixing up an automatic in my mind which was in my 68 charger; my challenger is indeed a manual.
So for clarification, the car will not start without the clutch being depressed?
I am working night shift tonight but will check up on the starter relay and see if it turns over as recommended

Can someone post a photo of the connection between the clutch safety switch, and the clutch pedal shaft for me?
Looking online it appears like they are connected by a figure 8 type of wire?
A good photo would help me in knowing what to hunt for.

Sorry I don't have a picture but it is a double loop figure 8 wire connected to the pedal that the switch lever rides inside

Your 3488177 clutch safety switch is not beyond saving. This is one I restored that was similar to yours.
