Rear end woes

I bought a 8-3/4 third member, 3.23 with his SureTrac Torsen limited slip from Dr. Diff. Works great, no noise, no clunking, no bang in tight turns. Two black stripes when I floored it. Using regular gear oil  no fiction modifier per Cass. I may have about 1000 miles on it now and no gear whine at any speed.

 :thinking:  I wonder if you have a wheel bearing issue or bent housing, so if I understand it right you have had 2 different gear pots installed , both with the same issue. Were they both the same " limited slip" device? Same brand etc...?

I was thinking on those lines myself. I was thinking of the carrier(pumpkin) itself could possibly be warped I would not rebuild the same carrier at this point.

I appreciate the insight on the Tru-Trac. I will look into that further before doing anything. The car originally came to me with a one-legger and that's when I bought the new housing complete from Randy's. The first housing broke a gear and I had that replaced. Now this time I am going to replace the entire unit (except for the housing and ring and pinion) I thought about a warped housing and I was going to ask if that could be checked. New green bearings were installed when I did the unit the first time. They appear to be pressed on properly. I was going to have those redone also--just for the hell of it. Maybe I will price out a complete unit from Dr Diff and see what the price difference is......

At that point why not order a Strange Dana from Summit and not worry about it---other than the fact that it is way more work to replace...and more money.....

I would think a 4 wheel alignment should be able to detect a bent housing , especially if you let them know its suspect?
When I was considering my options with the rear end I went with a new Strange Dana from Cass/DrDiff. He is very knowledgeable ! Sold off my 8 3/4 parts and put it towards the Dana . FYI the brakes from the 8 3/4 bolt right onto the Dana ..... new driveshaft is required but IMO that's usually never a bad idea either especially if your building a high HP engine... If your considering a Dana I'd recommend Cass ,  great time to do the B-Body width thing for more tire/rim clearance options , and Cass also sells the offset leaf spring parts . One stop shopping.  With what you have spent and still plan on spending the Dana might be a good option?

Not planning on building anything that crazy as far as the motor goes...but it is nice to know the strength would be back there. Then the spring relocators....then might as well do springs since who knows how old they are.....the snowball is getting bigger :bigmoney:   But I get it.......

Had the car aligned maybe 2-3 years ago..not a lot of miles since. Also, there was no noise before the Randy's center section went in so I am thinking it's in the there somewhere. The fluid is draining on this one right now, so it's almost out anyway. I will re-think my options. Hopefully something falls out broken out of this one and solves the mystery.

You need a driveshaft to go to a Dana rear???

Just my luck..Dr Driff does not answer the phone..he is requesting an e-mail. Hopefully he responds fairly quickly........

Hope all is well? Yes the driveshaft will be a different length with a Dana

Cass got back to me...he won't have a Sure-trac unit for a month..he is getting me pricing. I think that would be easier than the Dana and cost me less. The Dana would take 3 weeks, so the extra week or 2 is not the end of the world.

Or do I just get this with a Detroit Locker and have it in a week?? I'm leaning towards waiting for Dr Diff....

I'd wait. I've agonized for years on lockers and limited slip rear ends. When they work... awesum.. when not I know too many people ready to remove hair from head. Of all the solutions the Truetrack has always been the most appealing to me.  :alan2cents:
