@Cudajason You better hurry and get one of those temp guns. They only have 73 left.

By the way, are you going to try the CLR trick we talked about on the weekend?

Yeah at that price I am surprised they have any left.

I thought about the CLR trick...that is why I drained the rad.  I am also thinking of using on of  the Rad flush products.  I am a little concerned that the CLR may cause an issue with the brass in the rad.

How old is your Radiator?

Any cold spots on it when it's hot?

Put hand all around it off and check for cooler spots.

Bullitt-

Fan wouldn't be the issue as the problem escalates at highway speed...
Seems you have a circulation issue, if the thermostat doesn't pan out you may want to remove the water pump to inspect. We actually had a Ford pump wear away the vanes till it was just a flat disc.

Here's another thought. Are you running a clutch fan? If so, which type?

Seems either you have blockage in your rad, wrong tstat, or very poor movement of liquid inside you engine. Hey that kinda reminds me of that 440 source water pump I need to get rid of.

Ok, thermostat works fine.

Here is what I am worried about...look at the gunk in there!  Its just a light watter gunky film, but does not look good.

Ask away, i have nothing to hide!! :haha:

Mix of both...about 50 50. Up here in the great white north ya have to have antifreeze, otherwise its bad news!!!

That looks like what I found in my sons '04 Pontiac....sometimes he was adding Dexcool and other times he was adding green antifreeze.. Brown sludge like that was the result. Did you add a different coolant at some point?

Keep yer foot in it

Flushing it won't hurt anything. I flush with a garden hose, it will give you a good idea how good the flow is. I disconnect the lower rad hose and do them separately.

Yeah that is what I am working on.  I want to drain the block first and then I think I may dump some CLR in it or a rad flush product and let it sit for a day or so.  I want to see if I can get rid of that rusty colored film.

I don't recall using anything other than Prestone brand antifreeze.

My brother in law used this on his 69 cougar, says he had the same problem. Worked really well took a few flushings. From summit

Some have also used liquid dishwasher soap, vinegar, yes CLR, pool acid, and even naval jelly.  :stop: I just used Prestone flush. Be sure to have heater on also and for final fill use distilled water with whatever.

I would be very careful and cautious using that on a high mileage engine showing rust in the cooling system.

Why is that @Topcat?

I've taken engine apart where the head gasket was on the verge of falling apart right at the water passage.

And as 1WildR/T said the water pump eroded to nothing.
