Spider gear removal Open diff 489 case

Pulling this diff apart I removed the roll pin .There is a large flathead screw does that also need to come out to get the spider gears out ? I can see the ring gear will also have to come off to get the spider gears out?This is an open diff

That's not a large screw, that's the end of the cross shaft...  It should slide but as you stated with a 3.55 gear or higher the ring gear has to be removed... With a 3.23 it clears the teeth...

Looks like an open diff to me , is there 4 springs inside the larger opening / if so it is a cone sure grip

Ring gear bolts are left hand thread as I recall.

To the rescue again Thanks. I get it now, the slot is just there to be able to rotate the shaft to line up the roll pin.
