Standard flooded battery or AGM?

I need a new battery, is it better to get a regular one or go to a glass mat battery?
Will the charging system work with a agm battery?

What's the car?  Driver or show queen. 

The stock voltage regulator will keep an agm battery charged just fine.  I was using a 1970s regulator on a big block input in a Dakota with an optima red top and had no problems.

But, it sure don't look original to a 70 Cuda.

I think the most recent repro batteries have AGM racing batteries sealed up inside the stock appearing cases. They work fine I have one in my T/A.

I've had an AGM (red top Optima) in my 70 Challenger for over 8 years with no modifications or issues. My 21 JGC also has an AGM. I would not go any other route, unless needed for show car judging.

AGM is the way to go.  Generally, more powerful and durable, and they vent far less acidic fumes than flooded batteries.

Optimally, you should use an AGM specific battery or tender charger for these, but most get by with conventional equipment.

They basically should be trickle charged. My charger has a switch for AGM use.

Batteries.   For both my 74 Challenger and my 66 Charger i have been buying Walmart brand everstart silver or gold Lead/acid batteries for years with success.  My last battery is from them a 24F 600 CCA battery that is 6 years old.   They still give a 3 yr return warranty and are far less expensive than Diehard Gold $219 (advance auto), Autozone $209 or Oreilly super start $209.   

Walmart currently sells a 24F Maxx 750 CCA(note my cables are long enough that i can use either a 24 or a 24F battery) for $139.43 with local pick up and core which i have OR a 24F Platinum AGM or only $10 more at $149 with a 4 yr warranty and 710 CCA.   

I currently have a Stanley 15A with 40A starting fully automatic battery charger, that is supposed to work on all batteries including AGM. 

So at that extremely low price for an AGM should i go that route ??

I also only buy the Wal-Mart 24F batteries, only the lowest model.  Only paid $50 for the 575CCA that's been in the car for 6yrs now.  I see the same model is $70 now.
I'm too cheap to buy the more expensive batteries, it would need to last >10yrs to break even, just don't see that happening.
I'm in FL though, so don't have to worry about cold weather starts.

Put a Turbo Start Mopar Reproduction Red Cap Group 27 AGM in my Cuda back in 2013.
I keep an AGM compatible battery maintainer on it when I know it's going to be parked for more than a couple weeks.
It's 960 CCA, it turns over and lights up my 418 stroked 340 every time.

Sorry if i misled.   I believe that most will say AGM batteries are BETTER than standard flooded batteries and therefore will last longer.   I understand and believe that, but, then there are problems using AGM batteries in some types of situations and chargers.   

My 66 Charger is only driven about once a month and sits in the garage in both hot climates (raleigh, NC) in the summer frequently in the mid 90's,  and cold winters...temps often dip below 30 in my unheated garage.   I do NOT have an AGM specific battery charger for when needed...    My battery charger is a Stanley 15A fully automatic charger without a trickle charge switch or setting for slow charge.   Its the type that when you put it on determines the charge rate and slowly drops it to 2amp and then "foat" when fully charged. Sitting in the garage for a month, the ethanol laced standard gas evaporates, and therefore to start i usually have to crank the engine for at about 4-5 seconds, pump the throttle, then another 4-5 seconds of cranking, etc until i probably have cranked for 20-25 seconds..   So then of course when it does start, the charge rate from the alternator being a 45 amp alternator starts out with about 30 before it lesses down.    Then after driving the car for about 10 miles it shows full charge.   Sometimes, especially lately, i have had to put the charger on with start mode to get it to crank enough to start.   Thus my need for a new battery as it wont take a full charge anymore. 

So with the above in mind, am it a good candidate for an AGM battery or should i stick with conventional flooded battery ?   Price isnt an issue as their only $10 apart.

Just make sure to know these things about AGM batteries.
 1, they require AGM chargers to preveny battery damage. Conventional chargers produce too high of a voltage for AGM technology batteries.
 2, The charging system must fiunction properly. Charging in excess of 14 volts can/will damage AGM batteries.
 3, Comparable quality AGM vs Conventional Led/acid batteries are generally much more expensive.

I have been gutting the cases of my old  repro batteries once they die and hiding lightweight racing batteries inside of them. Goes from like 49 lbs to 21 lbs and cranks the cars ocer much fasterthan the reros ever did.
