I want to know if ALL torqueflite trans for 71 model year were stamped with a vin numbers.  I know of a 71 cuda which has the correct build date and P/n stamped on the pan rail but no vin on the pad.  The pad has the same textured finish as the casting with no evidence of machine milling marks.  could this be a factory overlook or has the vin been erased and the pad sandblasted to look like the casting?
I need your input before I decide what to do.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum @R15303    :welcome:

Post a photo of the numbers if you can.  Most over the counter and warranty engine and transmissions did not come with a VIN stamped on them... so that might be what you have.  Auto trans are pretty hard to remove the old VIN so if you can post a photo we might be able to help you.

Those are also from Vans or trucks, no VIN stamp.

The numbers stamped on the trans oil pan edge can be decoded and will tell you the application and date code of the transmission.

Thanks Guys.  I'll post a pic.
Also, the trans is stamped K3515843 3293 3296
I think this is correct for a 71 Cuda but decodes to Aug 1970.  Car was built Feb 1971  Is that too early??
Also - the last 4 numbers seem high - I may have read them wrong.
Please advise

just about any imaginable scenario could've happened to these cars back in the day - they were built by humans that were simply "at work" -  stamp missed - replaced under warranty on day one - replaced 30 years ago  :dunno:

yes, six months seems like "too long" before production, but it almost looks like something is there - possibly double stamped/lightly ??  :takealook: a better pic with a different light source may clear up whether or not what I'm seeing is actually there

should be a couple more digits on the other side also   PK3515843L3293 3296 for a '71 340 727

Thanks 6bblgt!!!
Does the pad look like it has been altered or erased?  I know you can't tell for sure but .......

6bblgt

it does NOT look altered  :alan2cents:

How about another question/answer.
What color should the 340 be in a 71 Cuda?
Thanks

Burdar

Orange up until April/May.  Then blue after that.
