When a build sheet depicts the axle as "open" on line 4 of a 70 build sheet (code 49), what exactly does that mean? Never been a differential pro.

Open refers to a standard differential...No sure-grip..

:bricks: Every restoration purist has a snapping point. I think I've just found mine. Differential was one of the only things not original on my JS23U0B. It came with a 3.23 originally, but has a 3.91 SG currently (I've never driven it, project phases continue). Was a 3.23 available in SG?

Yup: Don't leave home without it. Single peel diffs are a joke and have no place in a performance car.

Yes you could get a 3:23 sure grip, but unless you're drag racing or doing burnouts, will it really matter ?

@anlauto since my diff isn't original, I'd opt for the fun of an SG. Besides, with a 440 there may be some rare occasions when I'd want to have a little fun. Nothing crazy. I'm definitely not liking the idea of running the current 3.91 SG.

My last challenger was originally an open gear and I swapped it out for a SG. It's something that is easy to swap back. You pull your non SG rear end, leave it in the garage and if someone or some day you really care about being THAT original, swap it back in. I love original cars but swapping out a gear is such an easily reversible thing that I would never care if someone made the change. Owning a car that is poorly geared would affect my love for the vehicle, who wants to own a vehicle they don't love taking out for a spin?

Alternatively if you are just taking it out for highway cruises, who cares. Leave the open gear.  Single wheel cars can still squal the tires if your looking for a few smiles.

Someday I will have a J0b.

The pink 70 Hemicuda owned years ago by the late J Smith from Ottawa was a factory 3:23 open rear

@mccannix wow. Hard to fathom that in a Hemi. There was such a vast assortment of options on these cars, it amazes me.

...on the other end of that...my 440+6 4spd Cuda came with 4:10 gears and only F70X14 tires....the original motor was grenaded in the first year of it's life... :o
