I agree.

It's a great site but there are things that need constant attention and changing around to keep up with the other  e body site on the web.

Fakebook is very different so I am not referring to that.

@Cuda Cody   At the end of the day it is up to you and your community.

Quote from: TwitchisMental on March 31, 2025, 04:22:40 PMAs I stated the image preview can be turned off if the mass majority would want it turned off.

When the image preview is turned off it can be downloaded via clicking the attachment(as it is now) or as you mentioned right clicking and saving the image.

My main concern would be would making this change force the long time users to have to change the way we are used to interacting with the system.  I know the last update made numerous changes that some of us are still learning to navigate.   For one I wasn't aware that inserting photo's was even an option.
If this change is made would we now need to "insert" every photo that is uploaded?  Leaving as is may not be the neatest look but if it simplifies the process I would vote not to change, otherwise I'm ok with whatever.

From what I can tell, all the preview does is "preview" the attachment. If I had to guess at a reason why it's there I'd say it was because however long ago this forum was created it was an option embedded into the code that the forum owner could choose to turn on or off. Perhaps early on users were having issues with images not displaying correctly and the preview gave them an opportunity to remove it or find another file. I doubt that though, it was more likely just not noticed or left alone.

In order to attach a file the user has to go through a whole process of selecting the image to post so you're essentially previewing it already before you post it. I mean, if an image looks bad when you select it on your device, it's going to look bad when you post it.

The insert function on the attachment files is a triangle icon in the upper left corner under the trash can icon. Click that and it opens a box that has two fields - (pixel width and height) and underneath that there's a radio button that says insert. The image will be placed wherever the cursor is.

That said, inserting an attached image into the text is an option - it places the image at a specific place within your post. Like say you want to show something you did in chronological order. You type your thing, place the picture after it and then do that again for your next item. If you chose not to do that, your images will still appear but they will all be at the bottom of the post. There is no requirement to insert it if you didn't care to because by default, the attachment will still display at the bottom of the post.

I'm not sure if that insert function goes away without preview so I guess that would be one consideration to keep it but I'm betting that's not the case.

Where is this "insert triangle" you speak of?

I see Insert url, width and height but no triangle.  That's in the "insert an image" tab upper right above smiley's.

Quote from: TwitchisMental on March 30, 2025, 10:27:00 PMWith all of that said, the image attachment display can actually be turned off. Unfortunately not on a per user basics. Attachment previews are either on or off. So if the mass majority would like it to be turned off it is easy enough to do.
Since I know nothing about coding and web design/creation this may sound like a stupid question.

If the thing @TwitchisMental is talking about being turned off will the previous attachments/images below the "line" disappear from all the posts? The "line" I'm referring to is the one right below my last text sentence in the link below.

Great point Jay Bee... If this retroactively hid all of the previous attachments it would be a disaster ....  :o

huh, ok.  I'll try.

Ok, so that went where I wanted it but all I can see is the attachment file.  I'm sure the image will appear later when I post reply.  And again, here.

And that attached and inserted where I wanted it.

I wish I had known about this option for the past 7 years or however long.

Just to mention this since we are on the topic.  On the "other only " sites you can left click an image and drag it to a new window that has an open reply in it and place the picture with the cursor.  Essentially doing the same thing as this "insert triangle" that apparently is very difficult to see but with the cursor that I am already using.

I do realize that I can drag files to the attachment bar and then use the triangle to insert that drug file into the exact location.

That is weird to have inserted the images where I wanted them and then to go down and see all the images again.

Definitely wouldn't want all the past images to disappear in some way.   We already went through that on CC.com and lost years and years of great information.

It would NOT remove attachments entirely.. it would just be removing the image preview . So like stated in the OP when you upload an image and put it in the post, you essentially get two images. One being the image itself and the other being a preview image at the bottom.  That preview at the bottom would be removed but the file would still be there to download.  The attachment itself would not be removed.

Sorry, I'm still not getting this. In that link I referenced in Post #23 I see only one set of pictures, not 2, and below the "line". So, is that one set of fender tag pictures considered to be in the post or the image preview.

If it's image preview it'd be lost, if it's in the post it'd remain BUT why is there no image preview. Or to put it another way, why do I see just one set and not 2? Could it be that I'm looking at that Post #23 as the author and that's why I only see one set?  I can't remember how I added that picture and to only get one set posted up. That's not the only example of my picture postings with only one set showing on my monitor.

I can imagine how hard it is for a technical person trying to communicate their point to a not so savvy technical person, so I apologize once again.

You did not use the "INSERT" option that is being discussed here.
