Hello all, I just installed my A833 Transmission back in the 71 Challenger....I followed the instruction on how to set up the Shifter and linkage...lining up the shifter tabs and inserting a nail in the alignment hole. I then set 1/2 and 3/4 switches that are on the housing to the Neutral Positions as well. Also I disengaged Reverse.
Problem is that I can not get the Shifter to move left into the reverse Gate.....Shifter switches fine in all 4 forward gears but in the Neutral Position it wont push left far enough to reach the gate to be able to go up into reverse.  Have I missed something in the alignment process...I have a good clean Neutral and get a full Shift out of all 4 forward gears.   :wrenching:

It could be an alignment problem as the reverse slider inside the shifter has to line up so the shifter will move over into that gate but if you have a pin in place they should all line up & the shifter "should' move over , there is a second heavier spring to get into the reverse gate , Was the shifter disassebled at all & maybe assembled incorrectly ?

Make sure your alignment pin takes up all the space in the holes in the shifter tabs. It should be a snug fit in the holes. I think a 1/4 inch allen wrench fits tight.  jt

No, I did not take the Shifter apart and it was working fine before I removed it. I used a nail that had a tiny bit of play.......I'll put it in Neutral then try the 1/4" Allen Wrench idea.....if it doesn't go through then I'll disconnect the Rods and readjust.

Take the reverse rod off. Then put the shifter in neutral (spin the driveshaft to make sure it really is in neutral). Then see if you can manually move the reverse gear in with the rod still off. That should isolate if you have to pull the cover of the trans off or not.

Make sure the flat piece of metal the rod connects onto and on the trans is put on the right way.

You may have it on wrong and need to flip it 180.

don't ask me how I know.   :bricks:

All Levers on the trans should be pointing up unless it is an OD trans

Ok. I now can get the Transmission in Reverse. Problem was that I did not use a large enough Pin in the alignment Hole so thank you for the suggestions. I do however still have an issue with it popping out of 2nd when downshifting and when I do put it in Reverse it doesn't go in far enough to activate the Backup lights and the Reverse Light on the Dash. I can push on the Shifter and hold it and the lights come on but when I release the pressure the Shifter falls back just enough to shut the lights off. I've tried fine tuning the rods to try and get a little more throw out of he Reverse rod but it only gets to a point where it stops going into the reverse gate again....crap

Sounds like you may have a tranny issue. Is it pretty tight? Where does the clutch grab?

You shouldn't have the trans popping back out. Once the shifter is in the reverse gate you will have the reverse lights come on and the dash.

probably not throwing far enough , could be a leverage issue , the trans lever could be too long
