Ok my car is lime light fj5  With a black battery tray in the engine bay or compartment if you like . Question were they always black from the factory?  Were the battery trays ever body colour ?  The build date is oct 69.  Thank you

Rich G.

I believe they were painted body color.

It's generally accepted that all battery trays are painted body colour. However I believe there were some early cases where people have documented some type of "black-out" on them. I've never seen an original one like that. :dunno:

Thank you guys when I work out who to send pictures I will . The engine bay on my car is in the same condition as the untouched 383 cuda that was posted a couple of days ago all snatched paint missing very old and original. :t  :australia:

The original ones I have seen have been body colour. Back then with the old batteries the battery trays were generally in bad shape as the paint took a beating from the battery gases. In the late 70's and early 80's that would be one of the first items I would change when I bought a car, so seeing an old black one (from over the counter parts dept.) would be pretty common.

Batteries back then were notorious for destroying trays and fenders within only a couple years.
