Very sad news for sure...but I'm proud of my 18 year old son who actually KNOWS who Eddie was and let me know the news earlier today... 8)

Ya bummer, an influential  part of my adolescence gone. He sure was talented!

Truly amazing guitarist RIP  :andyangel:

I skipped my final exams my senior year of HS in 1988 to go see VanHalen at Monsters of Rock at Alpine Valley in southern Wisconsin.  The principal was pissed!  Got suspended.  Held my transcripts to college until I sat the suspension.  I greased his palm with Vaseline when I got my diploma during graduation.  All because I needed to see VanHalen!
Drove there in a 72 Duster 340.  I drove my buddy's car because he stayed up all night putting brakes in it so we could get there.  I remember seeing a license plate that read "each it".  Coolest plate ever!!
It was an incredible show.  Absolutely a great memory I will never forget.  Seeing him play Eruption and Ain't talkin bout love will never be forgotten.  Massive solo: for like 20 minutes.  Sammy Hagar fell down and broke his tail bone that night.  The day is etched in my mind forever.
It is hard to lose my idols as I get older.   :crying:
"Don't brake until you see God!"

Eddie was a legend.  :andyangel:

Saw him with Van Halen and also Van Haggar.

Sad to hear, never saw him with Roth but Hagar put on a great show with them - every band member had amazing talent.

Bought VH1 in '78, my first cassette purchase.  As a new 13 yo guitarist, I was thrilled and horrified hearing the foreign sounds of Eruption blast through my JVC boombox.  Took me months of investigation to find out how he got those noises to come out from his guitar.  No one in my circle of novices ever heard of finger tapping.

I've only been to 4 concerts so far. In 1984 or 85? I saw Ozzy, Triumph, and Van Halen with the new then 1984 album.  All three in the same year in Toronto. Last year of High School for me.  Was an amazing time for great music. Great time of my life to I guess, no real responsibilities, debt or attachments. Like who doesn't respect Eddy's talent. He was one of the best for sure! A piece of my adolescence that will never be forgotten!  Thanks for the memories!

RIP Eddy!

Eddie was also a renowned Pianist at first.

He also played Drums earlier.
When his brother was doing better than him; he switched to Guitar.

I was never a huge Van Halen fan, but always liked them from the first time I heard them which I believe was my sophomore year in high school.
I saw them in concert once, at the late great Chicago Amphitheater which probably was in 1979.
I'm reminded of when Tom Petty passed away a couple years ago, at the time it occurred to me that his music had been part of my life for 4 decades, it was part of the soundtrack of my life without me really realizing it, and the same can be said of Van Halen.
I stumbled across this interview of Eddie that was fairly recent while looking at Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen videos the last few days, where he talks about his life, how he came up with some of his innovations, and how his is a story of the great opportunities the United States offers as he immigrated here as a young boy from a poor family and became a famous rock star.  It's a great interview!

I heard this story from a friend yesterday.  News to me.  Amazing.

Lets not forget that he also was the crazed, out of this world, guitar sounds utilized by Marty McFly to simulate an alien encounter in "Back To The Future".
