When I watch kids riding their bicycles no-handed while looking at their cell phones, I fear for the next generation of drivers and the people around them.

I drive for a living so I'm on the road a lot. Almost every time I see a Tesla beside me the driver doesn't even have hands on the steering wheel. INSANE!!

Sounds like the Tesla was doing just fine.

My brother has a Model 3 and he enjoys letting the Tesla drive as much as he can.

Because of all the standard cameras he has lots of saved footage of the Tesla successfully making evasive action when the insane drivers on the road do more dangerous things than autopilot.

It's inevitable that autonomous vehicles will be safer than humans.

If you want to put your life in the hands of a computer and sensors that both fail, I guess that is your right, but please, don't put mine. You state that autonomous vehicles will be safer than humans. Tell that to the 737 Max passengers. Having systems that assist is one thing. Fully autonomous is a massive mistake.

The US has 39,000 deaths a year and 4.4 million people injured enough to require medical attention, the human driver is not doing so well.  People are driving that are too lazy to drive as it is.

Yes, a lot of bad/distracted/drunk, high drivers on the road but it is also INEVITABLE that man made mechanical or computerized things will fail at some point. Name one thing that man has created that has never failed, bet you can`t which is why I will never fully trust them, also why I don`t like to fly.

My thinking is probably more in line with 340Challman's, but the sad truth of this debate is that both you are completely correct.

Astoundingly way more deaths and accidents happen due to human error as compared to all of the automated issues put together.
Everything that we count on working for driving our cars is based on "faith".
Faith that when we press the brake pedal the brakes will stop, faith that when we turn the steering wheel left or right it will, faith that the rubber on our tires won't blow up, etc. etc. etc.
All in all these things work consistently without failure.
None of these inventions started out perfectly and it took much time and many tries upgrades to get them to the point that they are now.
The same will go for the new technology, we are in more danger driving our old Great Mopars but don't hesitate to do so.
Bottom line, whether we like it or not, technology will progress and yes risks will always be there even as minimal as they may be but again no comparison with human error.
As to the main topic my problem is not with the car technologies but with the way the driver chose to use it. Again, driver error!!

Well, ya...... but what 10,000 ? 100,000 ?  times more driver cars out there than autonomous cars so you can't compare it that way. I'm sure it will get better in time but.....
I have to admit it would be pretty cool to drive somewhere, grab a quick nap , but can't say I'm able to put that much faith in anything man made just yet.
One little emp, solar flair, asteroid, and what people will be to dumb to drive cars, do math, grow food, etc...   LOL  Technology as good as it serves us can also very quickly be our downfall.
