Agreed, count me as another person who disagreed with just about everything in that quote too. Not sure why one would consider Magnums "wrong wheels"--that's actually a historically incorrect statement. You could ORDER Magnums with your Challenger back in the day. In-fact, most brochures/ads show challengers with Magnums....to an amount that actually amazes me.

Magnums ARE a Dodge Challenger wheel, just like Ralleyes are as well! Just like Dog dishes are too! It's OK to prefer one over the other, but I wouldn't be saying "wrong wheels" if that particular style was actually available from the factory. "Not original wheels" is a different conversation entirely.

IMO, 15" nearly any style is better than 14".

IMO, the 17" Ralleyes look "wrong". The 14/15" Ralleyes give the perception of a near perfect circle due to the reflection of the chrome ring. The 17" ralleyes give the perception of an elongated crescent shape. It's enough that it bugs the crap out of me. Personally, I think these cars look better w/ 15" wheels and some meats, rather than a 17" wheel and thin fillet steak.

Alan's point, as is my point, is Chrysler didn't use a chrome road wheel after 68.... If you have a 68 use the chrome road wheel, 69 & later had a trim ring... Ford used a chrome road wheel through 72, if you own a Ford go ahead & use the chrome road wheel.... Challengers just don't look quite right with them.... Sorry if thats not what you want to hear....  I will allow that the chrome wheels look better on certain colors than others but the trim rings always look better IMO...

I missed the point about "chrome"......I guess. I would agree that Chrome doesn't look right. Plenty of Magnum options in brushed, especially in alloy too....

Randy will have to make you some lug nuts though. :)

Well I have a set of each and I like both wheels so having to choose is not such a bad problem to have.

the all chrome "MAGNUMS" (Chrysler Corp. called them "ROAD WHEELS") were only available on 1967-'68 MOPARS - so they are NOT "correct" on anything else & never in 15"

as soon as one "up-grades" to all-chrome (& 15") on an E-body you are wandering into "custom" or "aftermarket" territory & that's fine if that's what you're looking for just like Cragar SS, Keystone Kustomag, Motor Wheel Spyder & the like.

& one last picture of my brother's GTX with factory "sport wheel covers" - I think that's all the wheel tire combos he's had on the car since ~'99  :looney: sorry for the hi-jack

I could look at convertible GTXs all day long!

I agree, they do. But, tire availability tends to move you towards the 17's. Last I checked there were few options for a performance tire under 17"
So I put 17's on my car a few years ago. The look grows on you...

Yes driveability is an issue for sure.

Congrats on your purchase!  It doesn't get any better than an E body convertible.
I was in a similar position to you back in the 90s, where I had a project but wanted to purchase an E body convertible to drive and enjoy by taking to some shows, but also drive around on nice days.  I was looking for a 318 car I was going to dress up with a rally hood and maybe rally wheels to give it a Challenger R/T look.
I ended up finding a 383 car instead, as luck would have it as I wasn't finding any decent 318 examples.
I really wanted to swap the flat hood for a rally hood, but with my usual huge list of things to do, that idea didn't go anywhere and now I'm sure glad it didn't!
As for wheels and tires, the car has stock 14" magnum 500s with F70x14 equivalent radial tires.
The car car drives and handles fine, and although if I could go back in time and check option boxes, I'd have opted for 15" wheels, the wheels and tires on in grew on me and look great to me so I wouldn't change anything.
If I had an E body I wanted to upgrade to 17" wheels, I'd probably go with vintage mag type wheels like Cragars or American Racing daisy wheels. The 17 Year One Rally look wheels don't look stock, so if I was going for a day 2 look I would go with a period correct mag. If I was doing a resto mod I might go for the Year One rallys, but never for a stock appearing car as those wheels do not look very much like original rallys.
Tires are a dilemma for me which I haven't figured out. My Eagle STs are too old, I am worried about driving the car at highway speeds with them.  But the choices on the market now don't work for me.  BFG Radial T/As are like feet, everyones got em. Cooper Cobras don't seem right for my car.  Polyglas bias ply repros, besides being expensive, are not a tire I like on a car that I drive more than locally.  Been there done that, I have F60x15 Polyglas on my '71 R/T Challenger,  have taken it on some hour or so long highway trips to shows, and did not enjoy those drives at all.  Local cruises and such, no problem, but no bias ply tires on a driver car for me!
There are F70 Firestone wide oval repro radials on the market now, but Firestone tires don't look "right" on a Mopar as they were never factory built with Firestones. Day 2 certainly, as I'm sure many E bodies had Firestones installed on them within a year or two of the car being new.
And there are F70x14 Polyglas radial repros coming to market, but their introduction is delayed and won't be in time for this year's cruise season.  The prototypes I saw had sort of a strange look to the tread/sidewall interface I didn't like, though I could learn to live with it.
I could run Cooper or BFG with the blackwall side "out", but I like the white letter look on a vintage musclecar.
The tire situation on my convertible reminds me of voting in recent elections, it's hard to get excited when all the candidates suck!  :pullinghair:

JH, Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/Ts are really good tires. Cheaper and better than BFG...give them a look.

My early A66 didn't have the option for 15" rallye, sadly.

A 71 Cuda has always been on my dream car list. I may not have found a finished Cuda in my price range but I think a finished Barracuda convertible is a hell of a compromise. I'm gonna drive the hell out of this thing. I definitely want to leave it stock because you just don't see them anywhere. I have nice wheels on it now so I might as well put some miles on the car before deciding. If I deviate from the stock wheel and tire combos, I'd at least like to stay with wheels and tires that look period correct. Most Mopar guys wouldn't know and non Mopar guys definitely wouldn't know.

Should have it in a few days. I'll throw up som pictures right away.

Best choice for sure is to enjoy the car some before you decide on upgrades.  Drive it around, take it to a few shows and cruise ins.  You might find that having a stock Barracuda convertible is really fun in show fields full of dressed up clones and optioned up muscle cars!  As I mentioned earlier, I was really determined to dress up my car with a "raisen bran" hood, but after having it for a while, I came to appreciate my car's flat hood when the vast majority of other E bodies I'd see had rally hoods. I'm glad I didn't rush into upgrades when I got it.
I'm sure you are counting down the days until the transporter shows up, better than any Christmas ever was in terms of excitement and anticipation! :veryexcited:

The driver just texted me that it's looking like Thursday morning. Probably won't sleep much. Haha
