Some times I just can't help myself.....
From this......
...to this.... :o
About 30 hours to disassemble carefully, 8 hours to strip doors, strip motor/transmission assembly and another 10 hours scraping undercoating and stripping out the old seam sealer...
Uh: It looked better before you laid your hands on it this time Alan.
:haha: agreed....
He's done so many now... he's starting to restore them in reverse. :o lol Sometimes cars that look nice are still in need of some love. Looking forward to seeing this one come back stronger then before. :burnout:

Glad to see someone take the time to repair a car right. Even if it looked so good at the start, it's now going to be done right.
Yea it's amazing what you find when you take a "shiny" car apart... :takealook:
I'm interested in seeing what a car that looked pretty good looks like after blasting.
Well I'm three weeks in.....Here's what you find when you take a beautiful car down past the underwear....
Trunk floor and extensions are toast...we knew that.....found lots of pin holes in the front floor, expected that.....Found patches behind the rear wheels, but nothing but swiss cheese in front... :bye:
:unbelievable: Wow, that's a lot of plastic to fill in all the holes. Bet the owner is super happy his having you do this now.
Any idea who did the last restoration / paint job?
Wow that's crazy what some lipstick can hide
That's why I don't buy done cars.
It's always amazing how much paint can hide
Yes the owner is super happy, I decided to have Alan tear it down and do the car right.
I could driven as is for quite some time.
But I would have been trying to upgrade a bit of the car at a time and it never would have been done.
Alan convinced me to do the entire car correctly. And I will know exactly what I have when it is completed.

Yep, by the time Keith and Max and Alan are done with it, it'll look better than it likely did new. :bigthumb:

I completely understand how filler and paint can hide a lot, but that is pretty amazing.
Is there a restoration thread on this one? Alan, do you have a page dedicated to this restoration, I would like to watch progress IF you are documenting it that way.
Thanks,

I'll post pictures in this thread from time to time.....With so many restorations done and so many on the go, I think people are getting tired of all the same type photos being posted.

So, I'm going to ask the question that perhaps no one else is comfortable asking... or answering...
How much is this going to cost?
I ask for a few, solid reasons.
For one, I'm curious myself, as this could very well be something I'd have to pay for some day, as I too lack the skills to do it myself. I'd like to have an idea what I could be getting in to.
Second, I think it's important information for someone to know whether they're buying or selling a car. If you're buying, well then my first point applies. If you're SELLING, then you need to have an understanding that, unless you had a similar restoration done at a similar cost, your buyer is likely going to have to have this done, and just because you spent X dollars on your own restoration, it doesn't make their restoration X dollars cheaper, since the first thing you do is remove everything that was done during the last one.
Lastly, a lot of folks have been skewed by shows like Overhaulin' and Fast & Loud where a car is acquired, "restored," and sold all within a 30-60 minute TV show, and they make it look easy. As a result, folks do NOT expect the price tags they receive when looking to have similar work done themselves.
So I ask because I think that, while it might be considered a "personal" thing, I think it's information that could be really useful to a lot of folks.
How much does what cost ? A complete restoration ? or just the rust repair ?
My 100% complete ground up restorations start at about $60K CDN or $45K USD. That includes everything from a rebuilt motor/tranny/suspension/steering/interior etc etc etc
That DOES NOT include any rust repair or replacing or adding hard to find rare parts.
Rust repair can go from $1 to $100000000000.00 depending. This rust repair might get close to $8500-$10K CDN or $6K-$7K USD
Does that (current) rust repair include the repaint?

Does that (current) rust repair include the repaint?
:haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: The cost of the paint job is in the original $60K.....
In the case of this black Cuda I expect taking the shell from black paint to bare steel, through rust repair, and back to black paint to cost about $30K -$35K CDN

Gotcha - that was the number I was looking for and actually the number I was expecting. That's about what the small shop I used to work for in North-East'ish PA would charge for a repaint with body repair. We'd always get that typical, "But the car isn't worth that much!" response...

Really I am looking forward to having Alan complete the car. My dream car was to have a special black Cuda. If I had not met Alan, I would have just driven the car as is. It was older paint job - done in approx the year 2000. Did not look bad at all. BUt when Alan is done I will have a new car.
Finally some wheels I like :drooling: Going to totally change the look of the car.....thankfully :clapping:
Correct "E"'s too.....Not "F"'s like everybody else :console:
Nothing beats the look of Polyglas on an E-Body. :alan2cents:
How much did those cost? That car was hiding a lot, no problem for a guy like you!
Wheels weren't cheap especially shipping to Canada. I bought everything through Summit Racing. Tires alone are $369 USD plus shipping, exchange, etc... each :bigmoney: Well worth every penny. :alan2cents:

I would guess people who really don't give a rats patooty
OR, those who think $2160.00 Cnd for four spindly, retro tires (before shipping but including taxes) is truly too much to pay for that particular rat's patooty! And, God forbid they get driven on or bumped into a curb or hammered in a burnout! Not my cup of tea, although at those prices, it could be a cup of 20 year old single malt! Wait!! You actually want to drive your car???? Who does that??? I can buy three sets of tires that actually ride good & handle good for less than the cost of these tires that "look" like tires from 1970... And perform about the same..... Pass.....

Shocked at the amount of hidden gremlins this one had. :bricks:
Makes you want to thoroughly inspect any vehicle you want to buy with a magnet and about 12 hours. Then again you won't find the pinholes.
Yea...I agree, a lot of hidden small stuff that you really don't find unless you blast it down to the bare bones....
Kelly at Boothill Auto Resurrection is doing a great job with the metal work....a lot of hand fabricated small areas... :worship:
Nice! I got a trunk corner like that I gotta fix, it's not easy to make the patches look good. Tried making one, but failed. Need a stretcher/shrinker I think.
I would make a wooden buck and hammer the form over it. That's a pretty deep edge though.
Metal work is all done, now it's off to the body shop....
First attempt at lining the panels went well....as it should, the only replacement panel on this car is one door skin !

Sanding time.
Working today on the door and quarter window regulators, tracks and hardware etc.....There's over 50 bolts that need to be cleaned and treated ready for a quick re-installation :)....can't wait
Alan - nice pictures and layout for reference! How do you clean and refinish your hardware? Looks freshly plated on my phone.
Alan,
Looks great as usual, do you have a source for replacement of the door rod cloth coverings ? I would like to replace mine once they are back from getting re-plated.
Thanks guys...
#1 Bolts are just wire wheeled one at a time, washed and painted flat black....I found this real cheap paint that goes on thin and doesn't build-up affecting the threads or chip while tightening. Looks a lot like black phosphate but won't rust.
#2 I've never replaced the cloth covering, but I would look into the antique auto market area.....I've seen it before at a flea market, not sure what purpose it had, but was very similar.
Thanks Alan.
How do you refinish the regulators?
All that stuff in the picture is just washed with varsol and will be greased up again once installed.
That's what I do too. Do you use the lube that comes in stick form Alan?
I just use a white grease, then once together I spray all the moving parts with lots of Krown F40 letting it seep into the bottom seam of the door as well.
Very impressive for just a varsol bath!
Member kdcarman flew in from Chicago today to check out the progress....Seems Adam and the boys at Boothill Auto are moving right along....the body is basically ready for final blocking and paint.....Won't be long now :fingerscrossed:

Never owned a black car so I bought a black car as my daily driver. What a mistake. It looks good the day you drive it off the lot and you spend every weekend trying to keep it that way. Canadian winters with a black car? Have to take out a second mortgage on the house to pay my car wash bills. I assume that it would be a different story for an occasional driver like a cuda though.
I'll step up and defend black. Yes it shows every spot and I spend a lot of time wiping it down but when it's clean it looks oh so good! :inlove: If you're not willing to spend the extra time it takes then it's not the colour for you. I have two of them, no regrets. Actually I have three because my truck is also black but its my daily driver and I don't pamper it, it's going to end up in the scrap yard anyway.

What do you do to take care of the black?
Will you/do you use the "dust mop"?
I figure I wont be able to take it our without a spray and wipe with Meguiars Detailer?
I also owned black cars. '70 w-31 was black and '09 Challenger was black metallic. My current 2016 Charger is black.
My '09 Challenger won best paint in a local car show. A bit of work keeping a black car looking good but well worth it.
That 'Cuda is gonna look Bad Ass in black!
Polish and wax in the winter. Then, maybe, once over with black detailer mid to late summer. I sweep it with the California Duster when I take the cover off and maybe when I get to a show. Dirt and bugs are spot treated with a wet microfibre towel and dried with another microfibre towel. Sometimes I give the whole car a microfibre massage just to bring up the shine a bit.

I have had my black cuda for 36 years and I don't think it is that difficult to keep up. Just be careful where you park it. I have some messy trees in front of the house that drip sap, seeds and the occasional stick. I use microfiber towels a lot and once in awhile hit it with a California Duster. Couple years ago, I had it out all season and think I washed it twice all year.

Im my opinion, the flat black stripes against a super nice black paint job like yours makes for the best looking Mopars. I remember a black AAR I saw in Carlisle a couple of years ago. The stripes look so subtle until you catch them in the right light.

This car also has original moldings and reproduction clips. I held the moldings in place, marked the area where the clips go in the trim. Then with my small grinder, I opened up the areas on the trim, a little on each side.
Just another PITA when dealing with reproduction parts :pullinghair:
As soon as the engine went in I could not resist installing the shaker next just to stare at it. At that point I would have to disregard all proper installation order just to stare at a freshly restored shaker set up.
Looks great!
That big ol' Shaker just hides all those nice restored carbs (Scott Smith Harms of course)....
Ha ha. I am the one my neighbors hate because some are left outside...

I wasn't trying to offend you or say you left these outdoors. It was more that the volume and quality of the cars surprises no one anymore.
Yea ...I know.....what I meant was...the deal with my wife is "THERE'S NEVER ANYTHING LEFT SITTING OUTSIDE THE HOUSE".....no rusted cars in the driveway etc....
Yeah my home owners association would not be happy about having crap sitting outside. Cant even park my boat in my driveway for long.

Alan. What kind of method you use to install door top moldings? I have original moldings on my car but cant get them installed... repro clips came from MegaParts.
This car also has original moldings and reproduction clips. I held the moldings in place, marked the area where the clips go in the trim. Then with my small grinder, I opened up the areas on the trim, a little on each side.
Just another PITA when dealing with reproduction parts :pullinghair:
Thanks for the info - I need to try something similar...

I can't see stripes....Can you see stripes?
Nice checkerboard reflections...
Very shuttle Alan. I think they will show more in the sun.
yes..kind of. Good lord that looks great!
Jason
They will look great, there but will have to look twice to see them
Pull those little things off, prime the quarters. done.
A small confession.....This car left the factory a TX9 black car, with a V1X black vinyl top and H6X9 black interior.....but regrettably not coded for the V6X black stripe :crying:....but who can blame the owner for wanting to add that very subtle touch that SCREAMS coolness :drooling:
For sure, I would probably do the same. And a heat gun makes it correct in about 5 minutes.

Sorry, but that's totally incorrect information. Challenger RT's came standard with stripes, On all Cuda's stripes were optional.

So then are there any 70' Cuda's that had 440 6 packs or Hemi's that were stripe delete?
I would think not.

sounds like there could be...and that would be cool!
There's no such thing as a "stripe delete" Cuda.
Stripes were an extra cost option on EVERY Cuda, and as stated only available in gloss black. (1970)
So YES there are plenty of 440+6 or Hemicuda's that left the factory with no stripes.
1970:
'cuda's OPTIONAL "sport stripes" V6X (BLACK ONLY) $25.90 & installation rate was ~24%
'cuda's OPTIONAL "protective body side moulding w/pinstripes" V5_ (available in red, white, blue, green, black) $29.45 & installation rate was ~20%
'cuda's OPTIONAL "TRANS AM" package A53 included V6H "AAR strobe stripes" (BLACK ONLY) & installation rate was ~16%
'cuda's OPTIONAL mid-year "strobe stripes" V4_ (available in magenta, chartreuse, white, black) $25.90 & installation rate was very low
that leaves ~40% 1970 'cudas (BS) with no stripes
Thank you Dan
Cool information Dan.
Can you spot the problem with this CUSTOMER SUPPLIED part ?
Incorrect "Wide seam" ?
Are you trying to make this one into a Challenger. You are calling it a Six Pack.
42 weeks start to finish..... :unbelievable:
Just need to fire the motor up, have the alignment done, few other adjustments and road test....
Not sure what's going on with the steering wheel, must be the flash of the camera...it certainly doesn't look that "red" in natural light. Looks like I'll have to vacuum the floor mat again too :pullinghair:

Yea.... but Alan lives in Canada.
Okay....so this car has been done about three weeks now just waiting for a break in the weather to get it out to my mechanic so he can do the alignment and do a once over before it ships out next month....
The car looks gorgeous out in the sunlight.... 8)...... even thou black cars....look better in shade.... :P
....and YES...the rear end will settle down more once it's driven, I've already raised the front end up a bit since these pictures were taken....
They don't get any better than that, perfect
WOW! :worship: :worship:
:drooling: Awesome job Alan, you do amazing work.... :worship: :worship:
:ohyeah: that is a beauty!
Awesome, looks great Alan. You won't want to let that one out of the yard.
freaking awesome!
What a difference wheels and tires make.....it's comparisons like this that MAKE the argument for PolyGlas Tires :drooling:
Check the dates on the pictures....11 months difference almost to the day...
@kdcarman (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/kdcarman_184) you should have just bought new wheels :headbang:

I don't understand why it took Alan 11 months to change the tires and wheels??? :looney:
I think the left hand threads on this side had him confused.
Looks exactly like my original '70 Triple black Cuda, except for the Shaker hood and mine was a 383 instead of a 440. Even had the rear speakers, console, and the rear window defogger.
I have seen this car in person, it is perfect in everyway.
Can it really be called a "restoration" :pokeeye: :haha:
Very cool Alan! Nice work! Nice touch on the poster too! :bradsthumb:

Great car, anyone would be proud to own that one.
That was an exceptional restoration Alan, and you should be rightfully proud of your accomplishments!
Thank you for allowing me to play a small part in the story of that car!
I have to get one of those banners. It's identical to my Cuda with the exception of the tires and wheels. :clapping: :unbelievable:
I plan on ordering one next payday!

Ha, ha: Yes I would like one of my FM3 R/T, FC7 Hemi Cuda and the EV2 Challenger, then the B5 Hemi Charger when Robin tools those up. I need to find a job to pay for them!

Orland Park - where are you located?
I'm in the other end of Cook County, in Mt Prospect. Will you be going to the CMC Belvidere show in July, or ever head west to Morris for the monthly huge cruise, or the Lions club show in October?

I don't generally get out for those shows. Although I want to try to make it out to the Morris event (those are on Saturday?)
The Morris cruise is the second Saturday of the month June through October. Officially starts at 6 but you don't want to try to bring a car at 6. Cars start arriving around 3 and the crowds start building by 5... by 6 there are usually 900 cars there and the streets packed with spectators. It's my favorite cruise even though it's 65 miles away from my house.
The Morris Lions car show is on a Sunday in October and is actually one of the biggest car shows in the Chicago area. 1100-1200 cars, decent size swap meet, car corral, big food court. Weather is usually great. Other than MCACN, the last hurrah of the years car show and cruise season.
