Have a Cuda 340, 1971 and would like to know the parts that need to match so it can be classified as matching numbers.
Any guide for that?
Does the rear axle need to be matching numbers?

"Matching numbers" can mean two things, typically it relates to the VIN number of the car which can be found in 11 places.
1) Dash Tag
2) Fender Tag
3) Broadcast Sheet
4) Upper Cowl
5) Rad Support
6) Engine Block
7) Transmission Case
8 ) DS Door Sticker
9) Warranty Card
10) Window Sticker
11) Title/Ownership
It can also refer to how original your car is, and whether or not it still has all it's original date coded parts.
....If you're concerned on whether or not your car has the correct original part numbered, date coded parts, that's a very long list, including most of the engine parts, etc.......the 8 3/4 rear axle assembly DOES NOT have any casted or stamped VIN numbers or even date codes that I'm aware of.

Excellent news, I have owned this 340 since it had 2500 km here in Guatemala. 47 years ago,
It was still with new cars at the show room. Belonged to the owner of the dealership.
Only thing I remember to have changed that made me wonder if it is matching numbers was the rear axle.

I'm very curious if the car has a fender tag. It seems many export cars had the fender tags removed.
does it have an import tag on the inner fender?

It is 4 speed manual shift. Like a pistol grip.
Will try to take a pic of the instrument panel. It is all black in kind of a sand texture?
The only Cuda in this country as far as I know.

Instruments look like this
The large pic with one big dial and four smaller ones lined up to the right
The fender tag would be in the engine bay on the drivers side inner fender apron. It will be about 2"x3" with a bunch of letter/number combos.
The build sheet is a multi colored piece of paper that would most likely be pushed in the springs under the rear seat or on the rear seat back.
could also be behind or under the front seats.
It could also be taped behind the glove box

Found this tags in the car.
No color paper under the front seats or in the back of them. First time they have been opened since new.
Do these metal tags have some of the valuable Info?
Still have to look in the back seat for the paper.
Was thinking about the metal tags in the seats when I asked if they had valuable info.

there are two bolts that hold the top of the rear seat. They are located between the two seats.
The lower seat pushes back and unhooks from two hooks, one on each side.
In this picture of the drivers side rear you can see the rectangle mount for the bolt and the "hook" for the lower seat.

The little square tag is an inspectors tag with a specific inspectors stamp on it. I can't make out what number/letter the stamp has.
Could you post another picture of the little square tag as well as a pic of the import tag.
That is a super cool car! Glad it retains all it's tags.
the tags in the seats are going to give you date's of when the seats were made. Not necessarily specific to the car but definitely helps to know they were the original seats in the car. I've not yet nailed down the decode dating of the seats yet.

I would suggest making quality color copies of the build sheet and putting them into every seat in the car. For future reference.
The radio that the owner of the dealership installed was a Blaupunkt. Think it does not fit right but the car is as I took it of the dealership.

Have the car in a hangar, light is bad, so the pics.
Only had a small flashlight.
the import/export tag is the oval tag to the left of the fender tag. aluminum I believe.
On the small inspectors tag, it has a 19, but can you make out what the cut out is? Is it a D or a C or?
When was the car repainted ?
Did find the papers that show it paid duties here in Guatemala when it came to the dealer.
Surprised, I bought it until may 1975, so in 4 years the owner of the dealership had only put some 2000-2500 km on it! Paid $6,500.00 for it.
Still smelled new. Thought I had bought it in 1974, the year I started with the airlines.
I am a pilot, flew day and night almost all of my life, airlines 43 years but had other part time flying jobs. (38,000 hours so far)
Used the car some 6 years and then pretty much stored it an used it only once in a while.
Decided to re paint it maybe 25 years ago?
Went to Mercedes, they did a very nice job but I noticed some very tiny bubbles in a very small area. Guy said, we will remove all paint and re do.
So they did.
Some years later I saw them again!!!
Still that way, hard to see them and just few places but thinking about repainting it again.

In that spot was either U for USA, C for Canada, or I for International order

Ah! Ok Hunter, I will take a Pic of the Oval tag and send it.
Its left side section has faded out.
Will also check what the cut out on the inspector tag is.
Have learned more of my Cuda in this 2-3 days than in the previous 45 years!

Maybe he did not order air conditioning because we are at 5000 feet elevation and it is quite fresh but no, he should have ordered it. It is needed in the summer.

Its a D, what does that mean?
Inspection tags are a bit of a mystery. I've yet to find any info on the stamps and impressions.
I suspect those are specific inspectors marks. When something was inspected on the line a very specific person would put their personal stamp on it. Something like Mark in day shift uses the D cut out while john in night shift uses the 19 stamp etc. etc.
I like to see them and try to keep them in the public eye as hopefully someday someone will have some info on each of those.
Probably don't mean much, but it adds a personal character to each car. My 71 has an square inspection tag. it has a 2C stamp

Any of you know how to find the paint code for the engine?
Is it on the fender tag? Could not find it in the production broadcast.
What kind of paint do you all recomend?
